If your channel uses a school-issued Google Workspace for Education account, first check whether the school has marked the account holder as under 18. YouTube lists creating live streams as unavailable for K–12 users designated under 18. If you are 18 or older but incorrectly marked under 18, ask the school administrator to correct the account’s age designation; a webcam, encoder, or YouTube viewing-access setting cannot remove the documented restriction.
First check whether the school account is eligible
A school-issued Google Workspace for Education account is managed by the school. Google says users designated as under 18 in K–12 institutions cannot create live streams. The school-account guidance describes this age-based change as effective September 1, 2021. See YouTube’s guidance for school accounts and Google’s Workspace for Education feature restrictions.
If you are 18 or older but marked under 18
- Contact the school administrator who manages the Workspace for Education account.
- Ask them to correct the account’s age designation to over 18.
- After the administrator updates it, sign in to YouTube and create a channel if YouTube prompts you to do so.
YouTube’s school-account instructions describe this route for an account holder who is 18 or older. The administrator manages the account; users generally cannot change this designation themselves.
If you are under 18 in K–12
The documented restriction applies: the account cannot create live streams. The reviewed Google guidance does not describe an administrator switch that enables live-stream creation for this account. Do not treat streaming equipment or changes to viewing access as a workaround.

Meet YouTube’s separate channel requirements
Passing the school-account eligibility check does not by itself make a channel ready to stream. YouTube Help says you must verify the channel and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The streamer must also be at least 16. These are separate requirements from the Workspace age designation. See YouTube Help’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Age: The person streaming must be at least 16.
- Verification: Verify the YouTube channel.
- Restriction history: The channel must have no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days.
YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.”

Start a live stream after the account is eligible
- Sign in to YouTube with the eligible account.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Go Live.
- Choose an available streaming method: mobile, webcam, encoder, or console where supported.
Choose the method for your production
- Webcam: A straightforward option for broadcasting from a computer.
- Mobile: Use this for phone-based broadcasting, subject to YouTube’s availability and requirements for the account.
- Encoder: Use this for a more involved setup, such as gameplay, overlays, or external audio and video equipment.
- Console: Use a console-native option where supported.
The streaming method is a production choice, not an eligibility fix. Switching from webcam to an encoder, for example, does not change the school account’s age designation or YouTube’s channel requirements.
Do not confuse viewing access with live-stream eligibility
Google documents the Admin console’s “Unrestricted YouTube access” setting as a control over viewing access. The documentation does not say that enabling it overrides the under-18 K–12 restriction on creating live streams. If a school account is blocked from going live, first resolve the applicable account eligibility issue with the administrator rather than changing a viewing permission.
