YouTube Communities is not a brand-new August 2026 launch. YouTube announced the channel-linked discussion feature on September 18, 2024, expanded access during 2025, added desktop support and management tools in November 2025, and announced further updates on July 20, 2026. It gives eligible creators a dedicated space where subscribers can start conversations, share images and text, and respond to one another between video uploads.
The latest additions include Community-only posts, viewer quoting of creator posts, availability on YouTube Music, and easier bulk moderation in YouTube Studio. Communities are best understood as a native engagement layer for a YouTube channel—not a private group, paid membership product, or replacement for every other community platform.
What YouTube Communities is
A Community is a discussion space attached to a YouTube channel. Unlike a video comment section, it is not tied to one upload. A gaming creator, for example, can let subscribers share screenshots, ask questions, suggest future topics, or discuss a game while no new video is live.
YouTube introduced the experience to support more persistent fan-to-fan conversation. Comments remain attached to videos, while the older Posts feature has traditionally been oriented around creator updates. Communities add a dedicated area where viewers can also initiate discussions and reply to each other.

What is genuinely new in 2026?
The July 20, 2026 update expanded an existing product rather than introducing it for the first time. YouTube announced:
- Community-only posts: creator posts can remain in the Community context instead of appearing on the standard Posts tab.
- Viewer quoting: viewers can quote creator posts in discussions, according to YouTube’s update.
- YouTube Music availability: Communities are now available on YouTube Music, although controls may not be identical across every YouTube surface.
- Easier Studio moderation: creators can manage viewer content more efficiently, including bulk approval, deletion, and reporting tools documented by YouTube.
- Existing organization tools: pinning, creator hearts on viewer posts, shareable mobile links, moderators, approved users, and posting controls have been added or expanded over the rollout.
These capabilities were announced across several stages, so an account may not display every control in exactly the same place on Android, iOS, desktop web, or YouTube Music. The current update is documented in YouTube’s product update thread.
How Communities evolved
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| September 18, 2024 | YouTube announced Communities as a limited mobile test for selected creators and fans. |
| January 31, 2025 | YouTube described dedicated spaces, two-way interaction, and moderation controls as the experience expanded. |
| June 17, 2025 | YouTube said Communities would roll out to creators with Posts access who opted in, subject to the rollout. |
| November 20, 2025 | Desktop access, pinned posts, creator hearts, shareable mobile links, and additional management features were announced. |
| July 20, 2026 | Community-only posts, viewer quoting, YouTube Music availability, and improved Studio moderation were announced. |
This timeline matters because describing Communities as a first-time 2026 launch gives viewers the wrong history and obscures the gradual expansion of access and functionality.

- The channel already has access to YouTube Posts.
- The creator is over 16.
- The channel is not configured as a supervised experience.
- The channel’s audience is not set as “made for kids.”
- The creator opts in or enables the Community.
Posts access is a prerequisite, but it does not necessarily switch Communities on automatically. Eligibility details are maintained on YouTube’s Help page.
How to enable Communities
On desktop, YouTube documents two routes. Labels can vary by account and rollout state, so use the wording displayed in your Studio.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Settings.
- Open Content controls.
- Enable the Community option.
You can also use the channel page:
- Open the channel’s Community page.
- Select Viewer posts at the top.
- Choose Turn on.
If the control is missing, first check Posts access, age, supervised-experience status, and the made-for-kids setting. A staged interface rollout or an account-specific display difference can also explain why the menu does not appear.

Creator activity
Creators can open discussions, share text and images, respond to viewers, pin important posts, publish Community-only updates, and use creator hearts on viewer posts where that control is available. Community-only describes the publishing context; it is not a guarantee of restricted reach.
Viewer activity
Viewers can start fan discussions where the creator permits it, reply to posts, share text and images, react to creator content, and quote creator posts under the newer functionality. The exact controls can differ across devices and YouTube surfaces.

Posting limits
Creators can control who may post and require a viewer to have been subscribed for a minimum period. YouTube does not state one universal waiting period for every channel, so creators should use the current setting shown in Content controls rather than assume a fixed number.
Are Community posts public?
A post made from a Community is published to that Community and does not appear on the channel’s regular Posts tab. However, YouTube says Community-only posts may still be recommended on a viewer’s Home page, Subscriptions feed, or Watch Next feed.
There are therefore two separate questions:
- Where is it published? Inside the Community rather than the standard Posts tab.
- Who might see it? YouTube may recommend it beyond the Community page.
Do not describe Community-only posts as private or members-only unless a particular creator has separately imposed such restrictions.
Moderation is part of the product
Fan-to-fan conversation creates another stream of user-generated content. A creator should establish rules and a review routine before inviting large-scale posting.
- Set who can post and, when useful, require a minimum subscription duration.
- Publish welcome text or Community guidance explaining acceptable behavior.
- Add moderators or approved users when the channel needs delegated review.
- Use YouTube Studio to approve, delete, or report multiple viewer posts.
- Pin reliable information such as release schedules, spoilers policy, or support instructions.
- Keep a process for spam, harassment, impersonation, misinformation, and account-specific complaints that should not be handled in a public thread.
Bulk tools reduce repetitive work but do not make moderation automatic. High-volume channels should schedule regular reviews and define when a post is removed, reported, or escalated.

Communities compared with other YouTube surfaces
| Surface | Primary use | Who starts the conversation? |
|---|---|---|
| Video comments | Discussion attached to a particular video | Creators and viewers, within that video’s thread |
| Standard Posts tab | Traditional channel updates | Primarily the creator |
| Communities | Ongoing channel-centered discussion and fan-to-fan interaction | Creators and viewers, subject to creator controls |
| Live chat | Fast conversation during a live stream or premiere | Viewers and the live host in real time |
Community-only posts add another distinction: they stay in the Community context rather than the regular Posts tab, while still potentially reaching viewers through YouTube recommendations.

Discord is stronger for real-time channels, roles, bots, and structured servers. Reddit is better suited to topic-centered public discussion that can operate independently of one creator. Facebook Groups may fit audiences already organized on Facebook or groups built around local and general interests. Patreon is designed primarily for paid tiers and recurring supporter benefits. Email newsletters offer the greatest direct audience portability, although they are less conversational.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should a creator enable Communities?
Communities are a sensible fit when a channel has active viewers between uploads, recurring shared interests, and enough staff or moderators to review posts. Fandom, gaming, commentary, education, music, sports, and hobby channels can all use the format for questions, release discussion, polls or prompts, and viewer contributions.
Proceed more cautiously if the channel already struggles with comment moderation, has little audience activity between uploads, or cannot respond to spam and harassment. Communities do not establish guaranteed increases in views, subscribers, watch time, or revenue, and YouTube’s official material does not present them as a replacement for memberships, Discord, Reddit, live chat, or email.
The platform also remains dependent on YouTube’s policies, recommendation systems, and interface changes. A creator who needs an owned, portable contact list should maintain an email channel even when Communities are active.

Common problems and fixes
The Community option is missing
Confirm Posts access, age eligibility, supervised-experience status, and the made-for-kids audience setting. Then check both YouTube Studio and the channel’s Community page. A rollout or account-interface difference may be responsible if all requirements are met.
Viewers cannot post
The creator may have disabled viewer posts, required a minimum subscription period, limited posting to approved users or moderators, or removed the post. Check the Community’s Content controls and posting rules.
A Community-only post appears in a feed
This is expected. YouTube says these posts may be recommended on Home, Subscriptions, and Watch Next. The label describes where the post was published, not an absolute privacy boundary.
Desktop and mobile controls differ
Use the current labels in the device and account being configured. Desktop support was added after the original mobile test, and YouTube Music is a separate surface with potentially different controls.

Bottom line
YouTube Communities is an established, expanding feature that gives eligible channels a native place for conversation between uploads. Its strongest use is lightweight, recurring fan interaction inside YouTube. Enable it when the audience wants to talk and the creator can moderate; use Discord for deeper real-time structure, Patreon for paid benefits, and email for audience ownership and portability.
