The report was correct, but its future tense is now outdated: Apple launched the Apple TV app for Android mobile devices on February 12, 2025. Owners of compatible Android phones, tablets, and foldables can install it from Google Play, subscribe, stream Apple Originals, and download supported titles without owning an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV box.
Apple now generally calls the service Apple TV; “Apple TV+” remains the familiar former name. The app is the software, while the subscription supplies Apple’s streaming catalog. Availability, pricing, sports rights, and billing vary by country and device.
What actually launched
Apple released a dedicated Apple TV app for Android phones, tablets, and foldables on February 12, 2025. The app is free to download; the subscription is paid. Apple’s launch announcement is at Apple Newsroom.
- Apple TV app: The Android application used to browse, play, search, and download content.
- Apple TV subscription: The service containing Apple Originals and selected sports.
- Apple TV hardware: Apple’s separate streaming box, which is not required on Android.
- Apple TV+: The former and still widely used name for the subscription service.
This was not Apple’s first presence on an Android-based television platform. The app had already been available on selected Google TV and Android TV devices; the significant 2025 change was support for mobile Android form factors. Google documented that distinction in its Google Play announcement.

Is Apple TV available on Android now?
Yes. Apple’s current platform information lists Android mobile devices as supported, and the app is distributed through Google Play. “Android” does not guarantee compatibility, however. Google Play eligibility depends on the particular device, its certification, software, and region. Search the listing on the device you intend to use rather than relying only on the operating system label.
Apple also warns that features and content can differ by country or region. A device may support the app while a particular subscription, sports package, trial, or payment route is unavailable locally. See Apple’s Android app guide for current regional qualifications.
How to install and subscribe
- Open the Google Play Store on a compatible Android phone, tablet, or foldable.
- Search for Apple TV, not only “Apple TV+.” Confirm that Apple is the developer.
- Install the official app and open it.
- Sign in with an Apple Account, or follow the account-creation prompts.
- Choose the Apple TV subscription offer if you are not already subscribed.
- Complete payment through Google Play when that option is offered in your region.
- Choose a title to stream, or use the download control for supported offline viewing.
Apple says Google Play subscriptions are unavailable in some countries and regions. If the in-app purchase option is missing, check the subscription instructions for your location or use Apple’s local web signup route. An Apple Account is still needed, but Apple hardware is not.

Compatibility and practical limits
Supported form factors
Apple’s mobile launch wording covers Android smartphones, tablets, and foldables. It does not establish a universal minimum Android version in the cited primary documentation, so do not assume that an old or uncertified device will work. The Google Play listing is the practical compatibility check.
Regional differences
- Catalogs, trials, prices, and sports rights vary by country.
- Google Play billing may be unavailable in some regions.
- Apple Account verification and payment requirements can differ locally.
- Offline downloads and individual titles may have platform or territory restrictions.
App missing from Google Play
- Search for Apple TV and verify Apple as the developer.
- Open Apple’s official app entry from the Apple TV app page.
- Check the device’s country, Google Play profile, and certification status.
- Install pending device software and Google Play Services updates.
- If the native app remains unavailable, try the web version at tv.apple.com.
- On a television, search the TV or streaming device’s own app store; the mobile Android app is not automatically an Android TV app.
Android TV and Google TV are a separate case
Television owners should not confuse the 2025 mobile release with TV-platform availability. Apple TV had support on certain Google TV and Android TV products before February 2025. A phone or tablet user should look for the mobile Google Play app; a television user should verify support for the exact TV, stick, or set-top box model.

| U.S. sports viewers | Potential access to MLS, Friday Night Baseball, and Formula 1 under current U.S. terms. | Local rights, package wording, and the date of the offer. |
| Travelers and commuters | Downloads for supported content and cross-device Continue Watching. | Download eligibility, storage, and mobile-data limits. |
| General-catalog seekers | Less compelling if you mainly want the largest licensed movie and television library. | Compare the actual shows, films, and sports you watch rather than the app’s store listings. |

The bottom line for the old “coming to Android” report
Apple TV+ is no longer coming to Android: the Apple TV mobile app launched on February 12, 2025, and compatible Android phones, tablets, and foldables can use it now. The sensible next step is to check the Google Play listing and your local Apple TV page, then weigh the focused Apple Original catalog, available sports, offline viewing, regional billing, and the limits on third-party, rental, and purchase content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an iPhone or Apple TV box to watch on Android?
No. You need a compatible Android mobile device and an Apple Account, but Apple hardware is not required.
Is Apple TV the same thing as Apple TV+?
Apple TV is the current consumer name for the subscription and the name of the app; Apple TV+ is the former, still common name for the subscription service.
Can I use the Android app on any Android device?
No. Phones, tablets, and foldables are the announced mobile form factors, but Google Play compatibility is device- and region-dependent.
