Short answer: Apple Podcasts is rolling out native video podcast episodes delivered with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). Apple has not announced a general-purpose live-streaming service for real-time broadcasts, chat, or scheduled live rooms. The feature lets eligible creators add on-demand video to podcast distribution through participating hosting providers.
Apple announced the experience on February 16, 2026, first making it available for testing in beta versions of iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4. Apple said wider availability would arrive in spring 2026, while current creator documentation describes access as expanding on a rolling basis.
What Apple actually added
Apple Podcasts can present video episodes inside the existing podcast experience. Listeners can watch in the app, switch between video and audio, rotate to horizontal full-screen playback, download video for offline viewing, and let playback quality adjust to network conditions. Video shows can appear in recommendations, editorial selections, New-tab features, and category pages.
Apple says HLS video integrates with existing shows, so eligible publishers can retain their established followers and downloads rather than creating an entirely separate listener product. The announcement is described in Apple’s February 16, 2026 newsroom post.

Is Apple Podcasts adding live video?
Not in the usual meaning of “live video.” HLS is a streaming delivery protocol that can technically carry live or on-demand media. Apple’s documented product is video podcast episodes delivered through a participating podcast host. Apple’s creator materials do not describe live chat, real-time audience interaction, scheduled live rooms, a live-event control panel, or a new broadcasting dashboard.
In practical terms, treat this as native, primarily on-demand podcast video. If your requirement is a live broadcast with audience interaction, YouTube and other live-oriented services remain the more appropriate tools unless Apple publishes separate live-streaming documentation.
Availability as of August 18, 2026
- Announcement: February 16, 2026.

How creators publish HLS video
- Choose a podcast hosting provider that supports video on Apple Podcasts.
- Sign in to Apple Podcasts Connect or create an account.
- Claim the show if it is not already associated with your account.
- Select the show, open Settings, and follow the video-delivery prompts if your show is eligible.
- Generate an API key when Apple presents that option.
- Authorize or connect the hosting provider using its instructions.
- Publish the video through the provider’s normal workflow.
- Check Apple Podcasts to confirm that the episode, artwork, metadata, and playback are correct.
Apple says the hosting provider delivers the video, much as it delivers audio today; Apple Podcasts is the distribution and listening surface rather than a conventional direct-upload video-hosting dashboard. The detailed setup is documented at How to publish video on Apple Podcasts.
HLS video versus standard RSS video
These delivery paths overlap but are not identical. Your provider may implement them differently, and some shows may use both.
| Area | Apple HLS video | Standard RSS video |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Through a participating host’s Apple integration | Through a video-capable RSS feed |
| Existing show | Designed to integrate with an eligible existing show | May require a separate video show or feed |
| Access | Provider support and Apple eligibility may apply | Depends on the host’s RSS implementation and Apple acceptance |
| Monetization | Can support dynamic video advertising and other approved business models | Depends on the host, feed, and destination platform |
| Best use | Native Apple Podcasts video with audio/video switching and offline playback | RSS-oriented distribution to services that accept video feeds |
Apple’s RSS guidance says a show that already has an audio version can create a new show for its video version to distinguish the two. Do not assume every provider uses the same feed structure. Supported RSS episode formats include M4A, MP3, MOV, MP4, and M4V, according to Apple’s episode documentation.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Apple’s content guidance expects video chosen or created with editorial intent, such as live-action footage, animation, screencasting, or archival footage. A static image attached to audio should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a substantive video episode. See Apple’s content and subscription guidelines.
Which hosts support Apple video?
Apple’s directory lists providers including Acast, Ausha, Simplecast, Podbean, Firstory, Audiomeans, Buzzsprout, Captivate, beehiiv, and Alitu. The list changes, and a listing does not mean that every plan or show has immediate HLS access. Apple’s launch announcement named Acast, ART19, Triton’s Omny Studio, and SiriusXM-related services including SiriusXM Media, AdsWizz, and Simplecast as early supporting providers.

What it costs
Apple says it does not charge creators or hosting providers to distribute podcasts through traditional RSS/MP3 or HLS video. That does not make video free: hosting, storage, transcoding, bandwidth, production, captions, thumbnails, and advertising services can all add costs. Apple also said participating ad networks would face an impression-based fee for dynamic HLS-video ad delivery beginning later in 2026.
The following prices and limits were shown on provider pages on August 18, 2026; plans, access programs, and usage charges can change.
| Provider | Published signal | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Acast | $50/month monthly or $39.99/month annually; 10,000 monthly video views included | Apple video described as early access for a limited group of shows |
| Buzzsprout Audio + Video | $25/month when billed annually; up to 72 hours per year, 1080p, and distribution to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube | Annual hours and listed features may constrain larger or more complex operations |
| Captivate Apple HLS add-on | $12/month per podcast, including up to 1,000 HLS downloads | Additional bandwidth charges depend on video length, file size, resolution, and Apple Podcasts streams |
| Libsyn video plans | Video page showed plans beginning at $12/month, with higher tiers at $25/month and $150/month | Cited pages marked Apple HLS as “coming soon,” so this was not a confirmed immediate HLS option |
For existing Captivate customers, the itemized add-on may be useful if download volume is predictable. Buzzsprout is aimed at a simpler multi-platform workflow. Acast is more oriented toward managed advertising and sponsorship, but its Apple-video access was limited. Libsyn may suit broader video hosting, but its cited status did not confirm immediate Apple HLS availability. None is universally best.

How creators can monetize
- Keep existing sponsorships and host-read campaigns.
- Use dynamically inserted video advertising where the provider and ad network support it.
- Sell host-read video ads.
- Work with participating advertising networks.
- Offer paid subscriptions where the Apple Podcasts and hosting setup supports video.
The commercial calculation must include video editing, captions, thumbnails, storage, transcoding, views or downloads, bandwidth, and ad-sales costs—not only Apple’s zero distribution fee.
Apple Podcasts versus YouTube and Spotify
Choose Apple Podcasts when continuity matters
Apple is strongest for publishers that already have podcast subscribers and want video alongside an audio-first workflow. Audio/video switching, offline video playback, Apple-device integration, editorial discovery, and participating-host distribution reduce the need to build a separate Apple audience.
Choose YouTube when visual discovery or live broadcasting is central
YouTube remains the more natural home for search-led discovery, thumbnails, clips, channel subscriptions, and live broadcasts. This Apple rollout should not be presented as a replacement for a live-streaming workflow.
Use Spotify only after checking the distribution path
Spotify supports video-podcast consumption, but “video support” does not automatically mean Apple HLS delivery. Apple’s partner directory currently distinguishes Spotify for Creators’ video capability from Apple HLS support. Confirm whether your host can send the same production to both services without separate uploads or platform lock-in.

Who should adopt Apple video?
Strong fits
- Interview shows where facial reactions and demonstrations add value.
- Educational programs, tutorials, and screen-based series.
- Video-first podcasts already being recorded for YouTube or social clips.
- Networks with editing, captioning, thumbnail, and moderation capacity.
- Shows whose sponsors will pay for video inventory.
Weak fits
- Audio designed mainly for commuting or background listening.
- Static conversations with little visual information.
- Projects without a credible audience or revenue case for video.
- Shows exposed to bandwidth charges that could exceed video revenue.
- Creators who need real-time interaction rather than on-demand episodes.
Before switching hosts, confirm that the migration preserves the RSS feed and subscriber continuity, and separately assess effects on analytics, ad insertion, subscriptions, and platform distribution.
What listeners and publishers should expect next
Apple’s rollout is a meaningful expansion of podcast video, but it is not evidence of a new Apple live-broadcast platform. Expect access, provider support, advertising integrations, and account eligibility to keep changing. The safest workflow is to verify Apple’s current directory and your provider’s account-level terms immediately before committing production or migration resources.
