Tim Allen has hinted that Shifting Gears could be his final acting project, but he has not announced a retirement date. In a February 2025 interview, he said, “This probably will be the end of it.” ABC has since renewed the sitcom for a third season, so the show is continuing while Allen’s eventual plans remain open.
What Tim Allen meant by “the end of it”
Allen made the remark in a February 2025 USA Today interview, as reported by Us Weekly. He was talking about the possibility that Shifting Gears would be his last acting role—not setting a date for retirement or announcing that he was leaving immediately.

He acknowledged that the thought sounded depressing, but said he had accepted the role because it seemed fun. He also described how much he enjoys being on set: “I just love being around the camera people and actors and the crew, so much so that I’m more uncomfortable at the thought of leaving the set and, God forbid, going to play golf.” That affection for the work sits alongside his sense that this project might be an endpoint.
Has Tim Allen confirmed he is retiring?
No. The reported comment is a hint about a possible final acting project, not a formal retirement announcement. Allen has also spoken about how much he likes working. In an AARP interview, he described himself as someone who loves working and invoked a Jay Leno line about retirement as mostly sitting. His remarks suggest mixed feelings rather than a firm decision or timetable.

Is Shifting Gears canceled or renewed?
Shifting Gears is renewed. Variety reported that ABC picked up the sitcom for Season 3 in the 2026–27 television season, following Season 2, which aired from October 2025 through February 2026. The renewal means the series is continuing; it does not establish how long Allen intends to keep acting or how many seasons he will do.
What is Shifting Gears about?
The ABC sitcom stars Allen as Matt Parker, a widowed owner of a classic-car restoration shop. The family story follows his daughter Riley and the disruption of family members returning to his life. Allen said he wanted a character confronting grief and family conflict while running a custom car shop: “I want a guy that lost his wife recently, so he’s dealing with grief; I want a guy with the family that doesn’t get along; And then he has a custom car shop.”
