Check the exact license and version for commercial use, looping or editing, live streaming, and the saved archive. Even when you have permission, YouTube may interrupt a live stream if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Keep proof of your rights and ask about allowlisting before going live.
What Creative Commons permission does—and does not—cover
“Creative Commons” describes several different licenses, not one blanket permission to use music however you like. The license attached to the specific recording determines what you may do. YouTube’s Help guidance on license types and Creative Commons’ license deeds make clear that you must meet the license conditions; giving credit does not replace them.
| License condition | What to check for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|
| BY (Attribution) | Commercial reuse is allowed under CC BY when its conditions are met. Provide appropriate credit, link to the license, and indicate changes where applicable. |
| NC (NonCommercial) | Commercial use is restricted. If the channel is monetized or the stream is otherwise connected with commercial activity, do not assume the use qualifies as noncommercial; assess the actual circumstances and license terms. |
| ND (NoDerivatives) | The license does not permit sharing adaptations. Check before editing or altering the audio, and do not assume that looping or other changes are automatically permitted. |
| SA (ShareAlike) | Adaptations must be shared under the same terms. Check whether your intended changes and the way you share the stream or archive can meet that condition. |
These conditions can appear in combinations, such as BY-NC or BY-SA. Check the complete license name and version on the track’s own license record, not just a “Creative Commons” label on a download page. Creative Commons says its deed is a summary; the actual license terms apply. Privacy, publicity, moral rights, and other rights may also matter.
YouTube’s “Creative Commons Attribution” upload setting is not proof that third-party music is cleared for your stream. YouTube says that setting is based on CC BY and can be applied only when all content in the video is eligible for that license. It cannot be applied to a video with a Content ID claim.

Check the rights for the live broadcast and the archive
A 24/7 stream creates more than one use to check. Confirm the license or written permission covers the continuous live broadcast and the recording YouTube may save afterward. Also consider the territories where the stream will be available; YouTube says copyright policies can vary by geography.
- Monetization: Confirm that the license permits commercial use if the stream is monetized or otherwise used commercially. CC BY permits commercial reuse when its terms are followed; NC variants limit commercial use.
- Looping and edits: Check whether the planned loop, fades, cuts, mixing, or other changes are allowed. A loop is not automatically authorized just because the underlying track is CC-licensed.
- Live and saved uses: Ask whether the permission covers both a live stream and its archived video, including any platform monetization you plan to enable.
- Territories: Check whether the permission is worldwide or limited to particular regions, and whether those limits fit your intended audience.
- Content ID: Ask whether the recording is registered in Content ID and whether the rights holder can add your channel to its allowlist.
For music from a third-party licensing service, read its written terms for the specific track and intended use. YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, so availability there is not a live-stream license.

Make an attribution record you can verify later
YouTube’s guidance for CC BY credit calls for the work’s title, author, source URL, and license information. Creative Commons’ CC BY 4.0 deed also calls for appropriate credit, a license link, and an indication of changes, without implying that the creator endorses you. Put the credit somewhere viewers can find it, such as the stream description, and keep a separate copy of the evidence.
- Record the track title, creator or author, and original source URL.
- Save the exact license name and version, the license page, and a dated copy or record of the page as it appeared when you obtained the track.
- Write the attribution in full: title, author, source, and license information. Include the license link and describe any changes when the license requires it.
- Keep any direct permission, receipt, or correspondence from the rights holder, especially a response about Content ID allowlisting.
A credit in the description helps viewers identify the work; it does not tell Content ID that the use is authorized. YouTube warns that music described online as “free” can still be flagged, and a description or off-platform purchase is not proof of clearance to its matching system.

Why a licensed stream can still be interrupted
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop using the content. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.
Permission and Content ID allowlisting are separate. YouTube specifically warns that a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has licensed the content if the channel is not on the rights holder’s allowlist. Before relying on a license for a continuous stream, contact the rights holder or its authorized representative, identify your channel, and request allowlisting where applicable. Keep the reply with your other rights records.

YouTube does not publish a topic-specific interruption or claim rate for 24/7 streams using Creative Commons music. Its guidance describes possible enforcement outcomes, not the probability that a particular track or stream will be flagged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Live interruptions and archive claims are different
Live enforcement happens while the broadcast is running. For an archived live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. A claim can block a video, monetize it for the rights holder (sometimes with revenue sharing), or track it; the result may vary by geography.

A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike. A strike follows a valid copyright removal request. If a claim appears, use YouTube Studio to inspect the claimant and the specific claimed segment before deciding what to do.
What to do when a claim appears
- If the claim is valid: Depending on the options YouTube makes available, you may leave it in place, remove or mute the claimed audio, replace it, or use eligible revenue sharing.
- If you believe the claim is wrong: Dispute only if you have the necessary rights and evidence for the specific use. A credit, a “free music” label, or a purchase by itself does not establish that right.
- Before disputing: Match the claimed segment to your track records and written permission, and confirm the rights cover the live use, archive, monetization, and relevant territories.
YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes. It warns that an invalid dispute can lead the claimant to request removal, so do not dispute simply because the track was labeled Creative Commons.
A practical pre-stream checklist
- Identify the exact track, author, source, and license version.
- Confirm commercial terms, adaptation or looping terms, territory, and permission for both the live stream and saved archive.
- Prepare the complete attribution and retain a dated copy of the license page and any direct permission.
- Ask whether the track is in Content ID and request channel allowlisting where applicable; save the response.
- After the stream, check the archive in YouTube Studio for claims and review any claimed segment before taking action.
YouTube lists its Audio Library, original music, Creator Music, and third-party services as music-sourcing options. Whichever source you choose, confirm the track-specific terms for continuous live streaming and the archive rather than relying on a catalog label.
