If your YouTube 24/7 stream started reconnecting after your Linux VPS changed its public IP, treat the timing as a clue—not proof of the cause. A change to the VPS’s outbound address or route can interrupt its existing connection, but YouTube’s published guidance does not identify a sender IP change as a specific cause of reconnect loops. Start by matching the first disconnect to VPS network events, then verify the RTMPS connection and check YouTube’s stream health.
What the IP change may have to do with reconnecting
Your VPS’s public IP is the source address used for its outbound network traffic. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion URL is a separate destination. If the VPS’s egress address or route changes, an existing outbound session may be interrupted; that is a plausible networking explanation for a disconnect followed by retries, not a cause confirmed by YouTube documentation.
Keep the YouTube ingestion hostname in the encoder configuration. Do not replace it with your VPS’s IP: RTMPS needs the correct YouTube endpoint and hostname for TLS and SNI authentication.
Diagnose the first failure
- Record the timing. Note the exact UTC time of the first encoder disconnect, not just later retries. Compare it with VPS provider network events, reboots, address changes, and interface or route changes. A match helps focus the investigation but does not establish causation.
- Check the encoder and service logs. Find the first failure message. Confirm whether the encoder process stayed running, whether DNS resolution succeeded, and whether a fresh connection could be established. If a supervisor is restarting the encoder, distinguish its restart messages from the original failure.
- Verify the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, recopy or confirm the stream URL and intended stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both; settings, including a previously used key, may be available from earlier stream setup.
- Verify RTMPS and network access. Confirm the encoder is configured for
rtmps, supports it, and can make outbound TCP connections to port 443. Preserve the correct YouTube ingestion hostname so TLS/SNI authentication can work. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. - Compare host logs with YouTube’s view. Check stream health and messages in YouTube Studio or the relevant LiveStreams API status and health information. A network reconnect can happen alongside an encoder, bitrate, or delivery warning; identify which messages coincide with the first failure.
- Ask the VPS provider about egress. Ask whether the IP event changed outbound egress, whether your address is reserved or ephemeral, and what stable-outbound options are available. Confirm that any advertised static-IP feature applies to outbound traffic and the relevant routing behavior. YouTube’s published RTMPS requirements do not state that the sender must have a stable source IP.
Check the encoder settings—but do not mistake bitrate for an IP fix
Bitrate and other encoder settings can affect stream health, but changing them does not establish a fix for an interrupted session caused by a network change. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these video-bitrate figures; the recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use the values for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one row as universal. Test before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.
What to change if the VPS network is the recurring trigger
If repeated incidents line up with provider-side address or route changes, ask the host about the behavior of outbound egress during those events and whether it offers a reserved address or stable route that applies to outbound traffic. Evaluate any hosting or relay arrangement against the operational requirements that matter to your stream:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Whether outbound egress remains stable through provider network events.
- Whether reserved or floating IPs apply to outbound traffic, not just inbound access.
- Network reliability in the selected region.
- Limits on sustained outbound bandwidth and traffic.
- Process supervision and recovery after an encoder failure.
- Total operating cost.
The available YouTube guidance does not prescribe a VPS provider or establish that any particular hosting feature prevents reconnects. A supervisor can restart a failed encoder, but repeated retries cannot correct a wrong endpoint, blocked egress, or recurring network changes. For a 24/7 operation, define what should happen during network reconfiguration and monitor both the VPS service and YouTube stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an encoder running on your VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after sending content stops. That statement does not establish exactly how every long-running broadcast behaves after a reconnect. Check the specific broadcast state in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a reconnect will preserve or resume the same archive.
