When FFmpeg reports Connection refused while connecting to YouTube Live, it has not established a TCP connection to the configured ingest endpoint. First copy the current stream URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check whether you intend to use RTMP or RTMPS, and then test network reachability from the machine running FFmpeg. The error alone does not identify the cause—and changing bitrate or the stream key will not fix a TCP connection that cannot be established.
What “Connection refused” tells you
This is a connection-stage failure: FFmpeg tried to connect to the configured host and port, but the TCP connection was not established. The message does not reveal whether the endpoint is wrong, the chosen protocol or port is mismatched, or the network path is rejecting the connection. It is not, by itself, proof that your YouTube stream key is incorrect.
Keep the stages separate. YouTube must first be reachable at the correct ingest endpoint; after connecting, it must accept the stream key and incoming feed; only then do encoder settings and stream health become the relevant checks.
Check the ingest URL and stream key
Copy the current stream URL
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio / Live Control Room.
- Copy the Stream URL shown for that stream. YouTube describes this as the address that tells an encoder where to send the feed.
- Paste it into FFmpeg’s server or destination field. Do not rely on a remembered hostname or reuse an address from another platform or an old setup.
- Compare the URL in FFmpeg with the one currently displayed in Live Control Room, including its protocol and port if shown.
Copy the stream key separately
Enter the current stream key in FFmpeg’s key field, separately from the server URL. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like identifiers that tell the encoder where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. If FFmpeg connects but YouTube does not accept the stream, follow YouTube’s startup guidance to copy a stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. Keep the key private; do not publish it or include it in a publicly shared command or log.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A bad or stale key can prevent YouTube from accepting a feed, but it does not establish that the key caused a TCP Connection refused error. Diagnose the connection before treating credentials as the explanation.
Check RTMP versus RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the exact RTMPS URL provided through the lock control in Live Control Room when you select that protocol; check that the URL scheme and server are actually RTMPS, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol.

YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance suggests trying port 443 for the SSL error case it documents. That is not a universal fix for every refused connection: use the endpoint and port YouTube supplies, and do not change ports without a reason tied to the URL or error.
Check reachability from the FFmpeg machine
If the URL and protocol match, investigate the network from the host that actually runs FFmpeg. A browser test from another device does not establish that this machine can reach the ingest server.

- Check outbound firewall rules and whether the network permits outbound traffic to the supplied endpoint and port.
- Check venue or corporate network policy, including restrictions on RTMP or RTMPS.
- Review VPN or proxy settings, routing, and DNS resolution on the streaming host.
- If the hostname does not resolve, resolve the DNS issue before investigating bitrate or encoding settings.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a confirmed explanation for your setup. Without the full FFmpeg log, endpoint, port, operating system, DNS result, and network policy, the specific cause cannot be determined. YouTube also emphasizes reliable connectivity and enough upload capacity for the stream; insufficient bandwidth can make delivery unstable, but it does not by itself prove why a TCP connection was refused.
Retry and diagnose the next stage
- After correcting the URL, protocol, or network issue, retry with a test stream.
- Use representative motion and audio, then preview the feed in Live Control Room and monitor its stream-health messages.
- If TCP connects but YouTube reports stream health or format problems, investigate the encoder settings below. Do not treat those later-stage issues as the cause of the original connection refusal.
Encoder settings to check after connecting
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Those are streaming settings, not a diagnosis for a refused TCP connection.

| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings page, whose publication year is not stated; accessed 2026. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream. Headroom supports stable delivery after connecting; it does not substitute for checking the endpoint and network path.

| Symptom | Likely diagnostic stage | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Connection refused |
TCP connection was not established | Verify the current ingest URL, protocol, port, and reachability from the FFmpeg host. |
| FFmpeg connects, but YouTube does not accept the feed | Stream acceptance or credentials | Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder’s key field. |
| “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out” | Connection attempt did not complete in time; this is not the same message as a refusal | Check endpoint and network reachability, including firewall, routing, DNS, and network policy. |
| Connection succeeds, then Live Control Room reports stream-health or format issues | Post-connection delivery or encoding | Review stream-health messages, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity. |
YouTube documents the timeout wording as an RTMPS troubleshooting example. A historical FFmpeg-user mailing-list log from 2020 shows a TCP “Connection refused” pattern in a Twitch example; it is useful only as context for the error stage, not as proof of YouTube’s behavior or a diagnosis of your configuration.
