To create clips with Streamlabs Desktop, set up Replay (the feature formerly called Highlighter), capture a moment with its hotkey or Replay Buffer, then trim and arrange clips before exporting. Streamlabs’ current Replay guide says “Streamlabs Highlighter is now Replay!” and describes additional capture and editing features; names and steps can vary by installed version. Read Streamlabs’ current Replay guide.

Before you start: Highlighter is now Replay

Streamlabs’ Replay guide, updated September 22, 2026, uses the name Replay and says the feature is free and currently supported on Windows only. A separate Streamlabs product page that still uses Highlighter lists Windows 10+ and macOS 12+. Because those official pages conflict, check the current Streamlabs Desktop download and the features available in your installed app for your operating system; the published information does not establish whether legacy Highlighter remains available in current macOS builds. Replay guide · Highlighter product page.

The instructions below follow Streamlabs’ documented Highlighter workflow. If your version calls the feature Replay or shows different controls, use the matching Replay options in your app rather than assuming every legacy label is unchanged. Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter instructions.

How do I clip gameplay on Streamlabs Desktop?

For the legacy Highlighter workflow, configure a hotkey and replay duration first. While live, press the hotkey when something worth saving happens. After the stream, open Highlighter to edit the captured clips, preview the reel, and export it. Streamlabs’ step-by-step guide.

  2. Set the hotkey you will use to save a clip and choose the replay duration (also called clip duration). Pick a key combination that you can press reliably without disrupting gameplay or triggering another action.
  3. Check the Replay Buffer setup if prompted. Streamlabs’ recording instructions explain how to configure the buffer and its hotkeys. Labels can differ between the older Highlighter workflow and current Replay versions. Streamlabs Desktop recording instructions.

2. Capture a moment

In the documented Highlighter flow, go live and press your configured hotkey when you want to save the recent gameplay. Highlighter uses Replay Buffer to retain the recent window selected by your duration setting, so set that window before you begin rather than expecting it to recover moments from earlier in the session. Can I make clips without streaming?

Yes. Streamlabs’ Replay Buffer instructions say you can start the buffer manually beside the Go Live button and save replays without broadcasting. This is a different capture route from the documented legacy Highlighter sequence, which says to go live and use the configured hotkey. Streamlabs Desktop recording instructions.

Streamlabs describes Replay Buffer as saving a recent window through a hotkey, while Replay automatically records and saves clips for later editing. Choose the buffer when you want to trigger a recent replay yourself; choose Replay when automatic capture and later editing better fit your workflow. Streamlabs does not publish comparative performance testing for these approaches. Streamlabs’ clipping overview.

Where do my Streamlabs clips go?

In the legacy workflow, return to the Highlighter tab after the stream to access clips, then use Export to create a downloaded highlight reel. The newer Replay guide lists computer, YouTube, Discord, and phone as export destinations; the options shown depend on the version you are using. If you cannot find a clip, check the Highlighter or Replay view and the export choices in your current app rather than assuming a particular folder or destination.
