First establish what stopped—FFmpeg, the service supervising it, the network connection, or YouTube’s receipt of a usable stream—then line up the timestamps in the relevant logs and metrics. Add reconnects or automatic restarts only after saving that evidence; recovery can shorten an outage, but it does not identify its cause.
Identify what “offline” means
Start with the exact time the stream stopped and distinguish among four different events:
- FFmpeg exited: the encoder process ended, either cleanly or with an error.
- The service restarted: a process manager stopped or relaunched FFmpeg. Check whether it did so after an exit, a health check, or a manual action.
- FFmpeg remained active but stopped making progress: a running process is not proof that it is still producing and sending video.
- YouTube stopped receiving or serving the broadcast: the local process may still be running while YouTube reports an inactive stream, an error, or an unhealthy input.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes stream states such as active, inactive, and error, and exposes health status. Those platform-side signals help separate a local process failure from an ingestion or stream-health problem. See the YouTube Live Streaming API stream resource.
Build a timestamped evidence trail
Use one outage time as the anchor. Compare the same window across FFmpeg output, service-manager records, VPS metrics, kernel or cgroup memory evidence, and YouTube’s health messages. A single log line or a low advertised RAM figure is not enough to establish cause.

Inspect FFmpeg and service-manager records
Check FFmpeg’s stderr and the service’s status and journal history around the outage. Look for a clean exit, encoder or muxer errors, broken connections, repeated retries, or an automatic restart. On Ubuntu with systemd, systemctl status and journalctl are examples of ways to inspect service state and logs; the exact unit name and commands depend on how the VPS was configured. Retain the original logs before changing restart behavior.
Look for memory pressure, not just low RAM
Review provider memory and swap graphs, if available, alongside kernel logs for OOM-killer messages. If the stream runs in a cgroup, inspect the applicable cgroup memory counters. In Linux cgroup v2, memory.events includes oom and oom_kill counters. A counter increase that aligns with the outage is stronger evidence than the VPS having little RAM in general. Whether these counters are visible depends on the host, container, and permissions.

Record the relevant counter values and timestamps before and after an incident when possible: counters indicate events, and a later nonzero value alone may not establish when the event occurred. Linux documents the counter semantics in its cgroup v2 documentation.
Check YouTube’s independent view
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect timestamped messages beside the stream-health indicator. The YouTube API also exposes streamStatus and healthStatus. An ingestion-starvation message means YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth delivery; it is a clue to investigate output and upload, not proof that the VPS exhausted memory. YouTube describes encoder setup and monitoring in its live streaming encoder settings guidance.

Check the stream path before changing VPS size
Validate output settings and upload capacity
Compare the encoder’s output configuration with YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you are sending. Measure whether the VPS’s actual upload path can sustain that output reliably; a recommended bitrate is guidance, not a measurement of your server’s available bandwidth. YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality for the connection, testing before the event, monitoring stream health during it, and recommends RTMPS.
Keep the dimensions separate during diagnosis: a bad or unsupported output configuration can produce a YouTube health problem even when the process has ample memory, while insufficient or unstable upload can interrupt ingestion without an OOM event.

Decide whether memory is actually implicated
If kernel logs, provider metrics, or cgroup counters show memory-limit pressure or OOM events at the outage times, reduce competing workload or consider a VPS plan with more memory. If there is no aligned OOM evidence and YouTube reports ingestion starvation or configuration trouble, investigate the encoder and upload path first. The available evidence here does not establish a specific VPS size: that decision requires your workload and measurements.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options selectively
FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for specified network errors, end-of-file conditions, and streamed inputs, including retry-count and delay controls. Their suitability depends on the protocol and input in use. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and configure only options that apply to your stream path. Reconnect settings can address selected connection interruptions; they do not repair a killed process, invalid output settings, or a persistent resource limit.

Use a supervisor or watchdog for defined failures
A service manager can restart FFmpeg after it exits. A watchdog may also act on a clearly defined local progress signal, but a process being present is not necessarily proof that frames are flowing. Preserve exit status, timestamps, and the reason for any restart. Otherwise, repeated restarts can hide the pattern while the underlying failure continues. An operator’s public GitHub notes illustrate a systemd and watchdog workflow, but are an example rather than a universal watchdog design: GitHub.
Match the remedy to the evidence

Compare a proposed change by the failure layer it targets, the measurements that support it, its expected recovery behavior, and its ongoing cost. The same symptom can come from different layers, so avoid choosing a remedy solely because the VPS has limited memory.
