A PC drawing a steady 50 watts at the wall uses 1.2 kWh a day, 36 kWh in a 30-day month, or 438 kWh in a 365-day year. The energy-charge cost depends on your current state or utility tariff, household category, consumption slab and subsidy; there is no single Indian per-unit price that gives everyone the same answer.
How much electricity does a 50-watt PC use?
Convert watts to kilowatts, then multiply by the hours the device runs:
- 50 W ÷ 1,000 = 0.05 kW
- 0.05 kW × 24 hours = 1.2 kWh per day
- 1.2 kWh × 30 days = 36 kWh per 30-day month
- 1.2 kWh × 365 days = 438 kWh per year
These figures assume the PC averages 50 W at the wall continuously. They do not establish the draw of any particular computer or include a monitor, router, capture hardware or other equipment. If 50 W describes only the PC, the estimate covers only that load.
To measure your own connected setup rather than assume its draw, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can show its consumption. No particular monitor has been evaluated here.

How to estimate the electricity-charge cost
- Find the energy use for your period. For the monthly example, use 36 kWh.
- Check your current tariff. Use the tariff for your electricity utility, residential consumer category and applicable billing period. Check whether a subsidy applies.
- Apply the right rate. If the tariff is a single rate for your consumption range, multiply kWh by that rate. If it is telescopic, calculate each portion of the added consumption at the rate for its slab.
- Separate energy charges from the full bill. Fixed charges, electricity duty, fuel adjustments and other items may affect the amount payable. Their treatment depends on the applicable bill and tariff order.
For the extra cost caused by the PC, compare the bill with and without its consumption where possible. A fixed charge may already apply to the household and may not rise just because the PC is added; duties or surcharges may be variable or calculated separately.
Illustrative Indian tariff examples
The examples below apply published rates to 36 kWh per month. They are energy-charge calculations, not full bill estimates or a current ranking of states. Rates differ by jurisdiction and tariff year, so use your current utility schedule for a personal estimate.

| Jurisdiction and source period | Published residential energy rate and range | Energy charges on 36 kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Assam, Domestic-A; Central Electricity Authority (CEA) 2025 compilation for FY 2024–25 | ₹6.24 per unit after subsidy, 0–120 units/month | About ₹224.64/month |
| Bihar, DS-II Demand Based; CEA 2025 compilation for FY 2024–25 | ₹4.12 per unit after subsidy, 0–100 units | About ₹148.32/month |
| Himachal Pradesh, Domestic; CEA 2025 compilation for FY 2024–25 | ₹2.07 per unit after subsidy, 0–125 kWh/month | About ₹74.52/month |
| Chhattisgarh, domestic schedule; CSERC FY 2026–27 | ₹4.40 for 0–100 units; energy charges are telescopic | ₹158.40/month before applicable subsidy or other bill items |
| Lakshadweep, LTDS-II domestic; Department of Electricity FY 2026–27 | ₹3.55 for 0–100 units | ₹127.80/month before other bill items |
The first three figures use the CEA’s published FY 2024–25 rates after subsidy. They are selected examples from its 2025 compilation, not necessarily the rates on a reader’s next bill. The CEA says its annual tariff publication analyzes State Electricity Regulatory Commission tariff orders; subsidy and duty information is collected from state departments and utilities.
Why the Chhattisgarh calculation uses the first slab
The Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s FY 2026–27 domestic schedule gives ₹4.40 for 0–100 units, ₹4.50 for 101–200, ₹6.00 for 201–400, ₹7.00 for 401–600 and ₹8.80 above 600. It states that energy charges are telescopic, fixed charges are monthly minimum charges, and domestic consumers may receive subsidy under State Government orders. If the 36 kWh is added within the first slab, the energy calculation is 36 × ₹4.40 = ₹158.40 before applicable subsidy or other bill items.

Lakshadweep has a separate fixed-charge component
The Department of Electricity’s FY 2026–27 page lists Lakshadweep LTDS-II domestic energy charges of ₹3.55 for 0–100 units, ₹5.30 for 101–200, ₹7.70 for 201–300, ₹10.05 for 301–400 and ₹13.05 above 400 units. It also lists a fixed charge of ₹25 per kW per month. At 36 units in the first slab, the energy component is ₹127.80; the fixed charge and other bill items are separate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to get the figure for your own home
- Use the utility and residential category shown on your electricity bill, not a rate copied from another state or consumer class.
- Check the tariff order or bill for the current period and the subsidy actually applicable to your household.
- Work out how much of the PC’s usage falls into each slab. With a telescopic tariff, the added 36 kWh may span more than one slab if household consumption is already high.
- Decide whether you want only the incremental energy charge or the total bill impact. Include variable duties and adjustments only as the tariff and bill specify; do not automatically add existing fixed charges to the PC’s cost.
- Replace the 50 W assumption with a wall measurement if the actual setup includes more equipment or varies in draw.
The examples here are not a cheapest-to-most-expensive state comparison: they cover different years and jurisdictions, and the CEA state table cited here provides FY 2024–25 data. A complete, current, like-for-like comparison across every state and DISCOM is not established by these figures.
