The desktop’s total depends on its purchase price, measured power use, local electricity tariff, and maintenance; a VM’s total depends on its region, compute, storage, and outbound data charges. Compare both over the same period and at the same stream settings—not just the desktop’s sticker price against a VM’s headline hourly rate.
What drives the cost of a 24/7 stream?
The largest variable costs are hardware and electricity for a home desktop, and compute plus outbound network transfer for a cloud VM. Stream bitrate links the two comparisons: a higher-quality feed can demand more encoding capacity and send substantially more data from a VM.
YouTube’s current guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform encoding recommendations, not proof that any particular desktop or VM can sustain the workload. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. At those volumes, VM transfer allowances and egress rates can materially change the bill. Check the exact allowance and charge for the selected provider and India region; do not assume that a compute price includes enough outbound data.

Neither a VM’s availability nor a desktop’s ability to play a file establishes that it will encode continuously or recover from a failure. Test the intended stream settings, reconnect behavior and recovery process before relying on a setup for 24/7 operation.
Estimate the desktop’s monthly equivalent
Separate the initial cash outlay from the cost of using the computer over time. A desktop can look inexpensive if you consider only its purchase price, but electricity runs continuously and hardware may need repair or replacement.

- Find the acquisition cost. Use the actual price, condition and warranty of the desktop you would buy. No particular current refurbished model, price or tested configuration is established here.
- Choose an ownership period and resale estimate. Calculate the hardware portion as (purchase price − expected resale value) ÷ planned ownership months. Keep first-month cash outlay visible separately from this amortized monthly amount.
- Measure power under the real workload. Run the intended loop and encoding settings, then measure average watts if possible. Idle power is not a substitute for the draw while encoding.
- Calculate monthly energy use. Average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 gives kWh for a 30-day month.
- Apply your actual tariff and other costs. Multiply the kWh by the applicable marginal electricity rate, then include relevant bill adjustments, maintenance and replacement parts.
India does not have one household electricity rate that can responsibly be applied to every viewer. Retail tariffs are determined by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. The applicable rate depends on the utility, category, consumption slab and bill adjustments. Use the current schedule for your service address rather than a national average.
Estimate the cloud VM’s fully loaded monthly bill
- Choose the region and VM configuration. Price the machine type and actual running hours in the India region you would use. Google Cloud lists Mumbai and Delhi among its regions, but its pricing varies by region and machine type; a compute rate alone is not a stream-specific estimate. Google Cloud Compute Engine pricing.
- Add storage and IP charges. Include the disk or other storage required by your source files and any public IP charge that applies to the configuration.
- Calculate outbound traffic from the stream settings. Use bitrate × elapsed streaming time to estimate data volume, then apply that region’s allowance and egress rates. Confirm whether the allowance is sufficient and what happens when it is exceeded.
- Include encoding capacity. If the VM cannot sustain the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate with its available resources, include the cost of a suitable larger machine, accelerator or managed encoding service.
- Check billing terms. Verify tax treatment, discounts, minimum commitments and service availability directly with the provider for the selected region and configuration.
A useful worksheet is: VM hourly price × actual running hours + storage + applicable public IP + outbound traffic + any required accelerator or managed encoding charge. Do not use a generic starting price or compute-only quote as the monthly cost of a continuous stream.

Make the comparison fair
Use matching assumptions on both sides: the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, source-loop behavior and uptime target. Compare the same ownership period, and put first-month hardware cash outlay alongside—not in place of—the desktop’s amortized monthly equivalent. For a cloud VM, count all recurring resources and transfer rather than compute alone.
- Cost: total cost over the same period, including electricity or egress and likely maintenance.
- Cash required: desktop purchase upfront versus recurring cloud billing.
- Technical fit: whether the desktop or VM sustains the selected encoding workload.
- Connectivity: home power and internet reliability versus the VM’s network and provider terms.
- Recovery and effort: who monitors the encoder, restarts it and restores the stream after a disruption.
Without your stream settings, city and utility tariff, measured desktop power, hardware acquisition cost and ownership horizon, and a complete regional cloud quote, a numerical break-even would be guesswork. There is no established India-wide statistic comparing these two setups for a 24/7 YouTube stream.

Set up and validate YouTube streaming
Whether the encoder runs at home or on a VM, YouTube’s ingestion settings still matter. Its guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Choose the resolution, frame rate and bitrate for the feed you intend to send, and test the setup before relying on it continuously.
- Configure your encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate and keyframe interval in the encoder, following the current platform guidance for the chosen feed.
- Connect through YouTube Live. In your encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown in your live-stream setup. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or expose it in shared logs or screenshots.
- Run a test and check stream health. Test the upload bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A computer or VM that can loop a video is not necessarily capable of encoding that feed continuously.
- Test recovery deliberately. Check what happens after an encoder restart or network interruption, and confirm that the stream resumes as intended. A 24/7 target requires a recovery plan, not only a successful initial connection.
YouTube says all streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That archive statement is not a guarantee that a 24-hour broadcast or the encoder itself will remain available and healthy. Troubleshoot cost and reliability surprises
- The VM bill is much higher than the compute quote: check outbound traffic, storage, IP charges, taxes and any larger machine or accelerator required for encoding.
- Traffic exceeds the allowance: recalculate from the configured bitrate and actual run time, then check the selected region’s included transfer and egress rate.
- The desktop electricity estimate seems too low: verify it uses measured average watts during encoding, the full 24-hour schedule and the correct utility tariff and consumption slab.
- The stream disconnects or fails to recover: inspect YouTube stream health, internet continuity and encoder behavior, then test reconnect and restart procedures rather than assuming recovery.
- The chosen machine struggles with the feed: validate the exact codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate under sustained load; revise the configuration or include the cost of adequate encoding resources.
