“Stream theme” can mean the look of OBS on your computer, the visuals viewers see in your broadcast, or your channel-page branding. These are separate jobs: changing OBS Studio’s built-in theme changes its controls, not the video you stream. This guide shows how to change the OBS interface theme, then how to customize the broadcast and your Twitch or YouTube channel.
Choose what you want to customize
| What you want to change | Where to do it | What viewers see |
|---|---|---|
| OBS controls and panels | OBS Studio settings or an installed OBS theme | Nothing changes in the broadcast itself |
| The video you send to viewers | OBS scenes and sources, including overlays, text, and images | The assembled visual layout in your stream |
| Your channel page | Twitch channel controls or YouTube Studio | Channel branding and page information |
If you meant a theme that appears in the video, skip to on-stream visuals. If you meant your channel page, see channel branding.
Change the OBS Studio theme
To switch among themes already available in OBS, open Settings, select General, and choose a theme from the Theme drop-down. The OBS Project’s Themes Guide, published January 13, 2022, documents that path. OBS 30.2 and later may show the setting under Appearance; menu labels and bundled themes can vary by version, so consult the current OBS Themes Guide if your interface differs.
This setting changes the OBS application interface only. It does not add an overlay, alter a scene, or rebrand your Twitch or YouTube channel.

Install a custom OBS theme
Custom OBS themes are installed in your user configuration directory rather than kept only inside the application installation. The directory may not exist yet, so create the themes folder if needed.
| Operating system | Theme directory |
|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%obs-studiothemes |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/obs-studio/themes/ |
| Linux | ~/.config/obs-studio/themes/ |
- Find the user configuration directory for your operating system and create its
themesfolder if it is missing. - Place the theme’s stylesheet and any required custom-image folder in the structure specified by that theme’s author. The OBS Project describes themes as QSS (a subset of CSS 2) plus custom images.
- Open OBS and select the installed theme in its theme settings. If it does not appear, check the folder structure, restart OBS, and confirm that the theme supports your OBS version.
- Get third-party themes from a source you trust. Review the files and the author’s compatibility notes before installing them.
Theme authors can use QSS to change interface styling. OBS’s theme-system documentation describes additional features in OBS Studio 30.2, including variants that expose theme properties in Appearance settings and an auto-reload feature for theme development. Those options are not necessarily available in older installations. See the OBS theme-system documentation for version-specific details.

Build a theme viewers can see
Use OBS scenes and sources to shape the broadcast image. A scene can combine a camera or other content with text, image overlays, and a background. The OBS Project’s overview guide recommends testing a setup before the first live stream; apply that advice whenever you change a scene or its assets.
Assemble a scene
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the part of your broadcast you are designing.
- Add sources for the content you want viewers to see, then add image and text sources for titles, labels, frames, or other graphic elements.
- Arrange the sources so the overlay supports rather than obscures the important content. Preview the scene at your intended output size.
- Check each scene and transition before going live. Confirm that text is legible, important camera or gameplay areas remain visible, and animated elements behave as intended.
The OBS Project’s “Be Right Back” tutorial demonstrates building a scene from multiple layers and adding text and static PNG or JPG images. See OBS’s guide for the workflow.

Choose overlay files deliberately
For static overlays, Elgato’s Stream Overlays guidance recommends PNG when transparency is needed. For animated bars that need transparency throughout the animation, it recommends WEBM. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every file will work in every setup: test the asset in the scene and software version you plan to use.
Use a ready-made package or build your own
Streamlabs describes theme packages that may include starting-soon, live, be-right-back, and ending scenes, with overlays and alerts available for customization. A package can provide a starting point; it is not required to customize OBS. Check what the package includes and whether its assets fit your setup before using it. See Streamlabs’ customization guide.

Customize your Twitch or YouTube channel page
Channel branding is managed on the platform, separately from OBS and your broadcast scenes.
Twitch
Twitch’s Channel Page Setup guide covers channel-page details such as accent color, panels, and the video-player banner shown while a channel is offline. Twitch’s Creator Dashboard guide notes that some features may be limited to Affiliates and Partners, so check eligibility for any control you want to use: Creator Dashboard.
