PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA busy disk is a possible factor only when your setup is reading video files from it or writing a local recording while the stream runs; it is not a proven default cause of YouTube playback buffering. Check OBS’s rendering-lag, encoding-lag and network-dropped-frame counters, YouTube’s stream health, and your upload capacity before blaming storage. YouTube does not publish a minimum disk speed for a live stream.
First check what is using the disk
Identify whether OBS is recording an archive, using a replay buffer or another recording workflow, or reading media-source files from the disk showing heavy activity. Note whether the activity and the buffering begin and end together. That timing can help narrow the investigation, but coincidence alone does not establish that disk activity caused viewers’ buffering.
YouTube advises checking local archive integrity and confirming that an archive file continues to grow during an encoder setup. Those checks make local recording worth inspecting when it is part of your workflow; they do not establish a general storage-speed threshold or prove that a busy disk causes stream buffering. YouTube’s streaming tips cover archive checks.
Use OBS counters to locate the problem
During the symptom, open OBS’s Stats window and watch which counter rises. OBS distinguishes frames missed due to rendering lag, frames skipped due to encoding lag, and network-dropped frames. The labels can vary by OBS version; the current project locale source lists the interface wording. OBS interface labels

| What you see during the symptom | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames rise and connection status turns yellow or red | The connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. | Test outbound upload speed, leave upload headroom, and check YouTube stream-health messages. OBS says it may drop frames to compensate for an unstable or insufficient connection. OBS Help Portal |
| Rendering-lag counter rises | OBS is not rendering frames in time; GPU load or scene-rendering work may be involved. | Check GPU load and scene complexity. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting |
| Encoding-lag or skipped-frame counter rises | Encoding performance may be insufficient for the chosen settings. | Review encoder load and settings. This counter alone does not point to disk speed. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting |
| A local recording stalls, fails integrity checks, or stops growing while disk activity spikes | The recording destination or local storage workflow deserves investigation. | Check the destination, available space and archive growth; compare behavior with local recording turned off. |
| OBS indicators look stable, but viewers report buffering | Playback conditions, viewer devices or connections, or stream latency may be involved. | Review latency settings and ask affected viewers about device, connection and playback conditions. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Manage live stream settings |
Check upload capacity separately from storage
A fast local disk cannot compensate for an unstable or undersized internet upload. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload capacity and recommends 20% headroom. Test outbound upload speed under representative network use; download speed is not a substitute, and other users or devices sharing the connection can affect results. YouTube’s streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips explain connection checks.
Match encoder settings to your stream
YouTube’s live encoder bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are H.264 live-ingestion recommendations, not disk-write requirements. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options, with frame rates up to 60 fps; check its current guidance because platform settings can change. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, no longer than 4 seconds. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than judging from a static test image. These are encoder and connection settings; they do not prescribe how fast your storage drive must write.
Change storage only when the evidence points there
If the stream symptom coincides with a stalled or incomplete local recording, try a controlled comparison with local recording disabled. If that resolves the recording issue, inspect free space, the recording destination and the disk workload. An external SSD may be worth considering for local recordings or media files only if your checks implicate the current storage. The available official guidance does not establish that buying an SSD will fix viewer-side YouTube buffering.
