Docker packages and runs the software; it does not schedule YouTube’s event or automatically press Go live in Live Control Room.
Understand the three parts of a scheduled stream
- YouTube broadcast: the event viewers watch. YouTube’s API calls this a
liveBroadcast. - Incoming stream: the media feed sent by your encoder, identified in the API as a
liveStream. - Playback and scheduling: your container plays the files and sends the feed; a separate timer or application decides when the process starts and stops.
Google describes a broadcast as an event and a stream as its content feed. Keeping those roles distinct prevents a common automation mistake: starting a Docker container does not, by itself, create or transition a YouTube event. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Choose how YouTube’s event will start
YouTube Studio: simpler, with an operator at airtime
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Schedule a live stream. Set its title, visibility and time, then keep the event details and watch-page URL available.
- Configure your encoder with the event’s YouTube server URL and stream key.
- At the scheduled time, check that YouTube shows the incoming preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream, share its URL and let viewers set reminders. Its documented encoder workflow includes checking the preview and clicking Go live; do not assume a timer that starts Docker completes that YouTube action unattended. The channel’s exact setup may affect automation, so test it before relying on unattended launch. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
YouTube API: more control, more application work
For recurring or programmatically managed events, an application can create or update broadcast resources and associate them with stream resources through the YouTube Live Streaming API. Writes require authorization from the Google Account that owns the channel. You must implement OAuth, API setup and permissions, handle quota or request errors, and follow valid broadcast state transitions; the API does not remove the need to run a media encoder.

A channel with recurring events can reuse a stream resource for broadcasts at different times. Google’s guide says one stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. That detail is not a general recipe for independent simultaneous shows: concurrent broadcasts have specific semantics, so design and test the bindings for your use case. The API guide was updated September 14, 2026. See Google’s broadcast and stream resource guide.
Prepare the playlist for the container
Make files and paths visible to Docker
Put the video files and playlist description in a directory the container can access. In Docker Compose, define the encoder or relay as a service and mount the media and configuration as volumes. Compose describes services, networks and volumes in YAML and starts the configured stack; it does not determine playlist order or wall-clock start time. See Docker Compose documentation.

If the host has insufficient space for the library, an external SSD is an optional place to keep video files. Choose storage based on the actual size of your media collection; no particular capacity is appropriate for every setup.
Choose a playlist format and verify every transition
FFmpeg can read file lists using its concat demuxer and ffconcat format. The list must match the media layout and the files need compatible streams and timestamps for the intended playback. Whether files transition cleanly depends on the specific assets and command; test representative files rather than assuming seamless playback. FFmpeg’s format documentation explains the concat demuxer: FFmpeg formats documentation.

Your playback command also depends on codecs, audio/video stream layout, timestamps, whether transcoding is needed and how looping should work. There is no single reliable command for every playlist, and the cited documentation does not provide a YouTube-specific end-to-end Docker scheduler. Run a representative test before building a long schedule around it.
Connect the encoder and protect the stream key
- Use the YouTube server URL and stream key for the channel’s event in the encoder configuration.
- Store the key in a protected environment file or secret store rather than a public Compose file or source repository. This is implementation security advice, not a YouTube-specific requirement.
- Keep the key out of screenshots, published examples and logs. Limit access to the host and files that contain it.
- Start the media process and confirm YouTube receives the preview before moving to a public event.
YouTube documents the server URL/key handoff and preview process in its encoder setup guidance. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the channel’s stream.

Schedule the Docker process separately
Use a host-level scheduler such as cron or systemd timers, or application logic, to start and stop the encoder process at the intended times. Choose based on whether each event gets its own container or process, how the host handles time zones and daylight-saving changes, and what recovery behavior you need. Keep the distinction clear: the timer controls your process, while YouTube event creation and state transitions remain separate.
A community project offers one concrete pattern using Docker-hosted Go2RTC, Bash, curl, jq, cron and YouTube API OAuth credentials. Its README reports Ubuntu Server 24.04, Docker 27.5.1 and project version 1.1.0 as the author’s tested context, plus assumptions about a /home/user path. These are project-reported details, not independent compatibility testing or a universal template. Inspect its current files, dependencies, credential handling, paths and time-zone settings before adapting it: community YouTube Live Stream Scheduler repository.

Choose an implementation for your workflow
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud service | Readers who want an uploaded playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without keeping a home computer on. | Upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, then go live; no Docker host or home connection has to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. |
| YouTube Studio plus manually started Docker encoder | Occasional events when an operator can be present. | Simple event management, but the operator connects the feed, checks the preview and starts the event in Live Control Room. |
| Studio event plus host timer | A predictable schedule prepared in advance. | The timer can start the encoder, but event state is separate; verify any unattended launch behavior for your channel. |
| API-managed event plus Dockerized player | Recurring events or custom metadata and state handling. | More automation control, with OAuth, channel-owner authorization, API error handling and broadcast state logic to maintain. |
| Community scheduler example | A starting point for readers whose workflow fits its documented RTSP and scheduled-event assumptions. | Community-maintained, with version, path and environment assumptions; inspect and adapt it rather than treating it as an official recipe. |
For straight prerecorded files, a command-driven player such as FFmpeg may fit. If the production needs operator-controlled scene switching, graphics or multiple live inputs, choose a production encoder that supports those needs. The cited sources do not establish a performance or cost comparison between these options.
Test the schedule before relying on it
- Create a private or unlisted test event and explicitly check visibility. YouTube notes that default visibility can depend on account age.
- Verify the preview appears, then check video, audio and synchronization.
- Let the playlist reach a transition and, if relevant, its end. Confirm the intended looping and stopping behavior.
- Test a network interruption and an encoder-process exit. Confirm what restarts, what YouTube displays, and whether a person must intervene.
- Test a host reboot, expired or invalid API credentials, moved source files, and the selected time zone, including a daylight-saving change if relevant.
- Set up logs and alerts so a failed process, missing preview or schedule mismatch is visible.
These are operational checks for a system made of separate services; they are not guarantees of seamless recovery. The available documentation does not establish a tested reconnect strategy for a particular Docker setup.
Know what YouTube’s archive statement means
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This describes archive behavior for streams under that threshold; it is not a guarantee of unlimited runtime, uninterrupted 24/7 operation, or a complete archive for a stream that runs longer. See YouTube Help’s encoder guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to maintaining Docker, a host scheduler and an always-on home machine. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud loops the uploaded videos, streams them as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds.
