Yes, you can run Indian regional music in a continuous YouTube livestream only if you have the necessary rights for the exact music and recording, the intended live and replay uses, and the relevant territories. Having the audio file, a YouTube channel, or a licence for a different use is not enough by itself. YouTube requires rights for worldwide exploitation on its services, scans live streams for third-party matches, and may interrupt a stream even when you have permission if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a YouTube replay.
These are general platform and rights-clearance points, not a ruling on any particular recording or a substitute for advice from qualified Indian copyright counsel.
What rights may be involved in one regional song?
A song and the particular recording you plan to play can involve separate protected material. IP India describes musical works and sound recordings as distinct copyright categories. Potential right holders may include the lyricist, composer, singer, musicians, and sound-recording producer. A song title, language, or artist credit alone does not establish who controls the rights in the version you have.
| Material or use | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Underlying musical work | Permission from the rights holder or authorized representative for the composition and lyrics, as applicable. |
| Specific sound recording | Permission covering the exact recording or version, which may have a different rights holder from the underlying work. |
| Performers and other participants | Whether relevant performer or royalty-participant rights are covered by the permission or authorized grant. |
| Live stream and any replay | Whether the grant covers live communication to the public and any archive, replay, or other use you intend to make. |
Remixes, live-performance recordings, compilations, alternate versions, and transitions in a loop can have different rights chains. Clear the actual files in the playlist, not just the names of the songs.

What YouTube requires—and what it can do while you are live
YouTube’s livestream terms put the responsibility on the provider to have all necessary rights for exploitation of the live content on Google services throughout the world. The terms specifically include music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Check the territory named in each permission against this worldwide requirement; an India-only grant may not establish rights for a stream available worldwide.
YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match that is not resolved may lead to a warning, a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. A permission letter does not necessarily prevent the matching system from acting on a stream.
YouTube specifically advises creators with a licence to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. It warns that a stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, even where the creator has a licence or has limited the stream to territories where rights are held. Ask about allowlisting before launch and keep the owner’s confirmation with the licence records.
Live matching, claims, takedowns, and strikes are different
| Event | What it means for a creator |
|---|---|
| Live Content ID match | YouTube may warn, replace the image, interrupt, or terminate the stream while it is live. A match is a platform action, not by itself a final ruling about ownership. |
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | YouTube says claims on archived live streams are made after the live stream is complete, if it is archived. |
| Copyright removal request or takedown | This is distinct from a Content ID claim. Read the notice and follow the process YouTube provides; do not treat the terms as interchangeable. |
| Copyright strike | YouTube says strikes on active or archived livestreams may disable live access. Its account guidance says three strikes make a channel subject to termination. |
YouTube says it does not resolve ownership disputes. Dispute a claim only when you have a substantiated rights basis, and follow the specific process in the notice. A claim alone should not be described as proof that YouTube has decided who owns a song.

Clear the music before starting a continuous channel
- Inventory every file. Record each track, exact recording/version, contributor or label information available, and any looped transition, remix, compilation, or live-performance version. Keep the inventory tied to the actual media file.
- Identify the relevant rights holders. Establish who can authorize the underlying musical work and who can authorize the sound recording. Check for relevant performer rights and other royalty participants. IP India’s general explanation identifies possible categories of participants, but it does not identify the owners of any specific recording.
- Get a written grant for the intended uses. Ask the authorized rights holder or representative to specify YouTube livestreaming, any replay or archive, territories, monetization if applicable, and the permission’s duration. Check that the scope is sufficient for YouTube’s worldwide livestream terms.
- Arrange Content ID allowlisting. Ask the relevant owner to allowlist the channel before the stream starts, and retain written confirmation alongside the licence. Permission and allowlisting are separate practical checks.
- Test and monitor. Start with cleared material and monitor YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions. If a match appears, identify the matched material and follow the platform’s instructions; do not assume that a licence will automatically override the matching process.
- Plan the replay separately. Confirm that permission covers any replay you want to keep. Keep a local recording if a replay matters to you, because YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Respond to notices by type. Determine whether YouTube reports a live match, Content ID claim, removal request, or strike, then use the applicable process. Keep the relevant licence and allowlist records available.
Indian copyright context: don’t assume a local licence clears a global stream
IP India’s explanation describes copyright as a bundle that can include reproduction, communication to the public, adaptation, and translation rights, and distinguishes musical works, films, and sound recordings. This helps explain why authorization for one layer or one kind of use should not be presumed to cover every layer and use.
The official materials described here do not determine whether a particular Indian licence covers a given YouTube livestream, its archive, a worldwide audience, or monetization. A venue or public-performance licence should not be assumed to cover a global online stream. Read the actual grant and confirm its scope with the rights holder or qualified Indian copyright counsel.
YouTube’s general copyright guidance notes that exceptions differ across countries. Its explanation of fair use is framed around US law; do not transplant that standard into Indian advice. YouTube also notes that routes such as permission, Creative Commons, or its music resources do not guarantee that a stream will avoid claims or strikes.

Do not rely on a complete YouTube replay of a continuous broadcast. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The 12-hour figure is an operational platform threshold, not a promise that every shorter stream will be saved. If you need a replay, make a local recording and make sure your rights cover that replay as well.

Or let it run in the cloud
Cloud hosting can keep the playback computer-independent, but it does not grant music rights, prevent every Content ID match, or replace allowlisting. You remain responsible for clearing the exact recordings and intended uses.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist of material you have cleared.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Each slot supports one always-on stream, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. Storage is 10 GB per slot, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; Monthly is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards are accepted; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo does not clear copyrights: use it only with material you are authorized to stream, and arrange any needed Content ID allowlisting with the owner. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
