To loop a video on YouTube Live from a Mac, add the local file to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to an encoder stream in YouTube Studio using its server URL and stream key. Start the feed in OBS, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and go live when YouTube prompts you. Test the complete setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Before you start
- Confirm live access: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take time, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Install OBS and prepare your file: Keep the video or audio file on the Mac that will run OBS. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Check your upload connection: YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send primary and backup feeds, include both bitrates before adding that headroom. Details are in YouTube’s network, encoder and bitrate guidance.
Set up the loop in OBS on your Mac
- Open OBS and select an existing scene or create one in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, click + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and confirm.
- In the Media Source properties, select the local file you want to stream.
- Turn on Loop, then confirm the properties. OBS describes this option as restarting the file after playback completes. The video should appear in the OBS preview; adjust its fit in the canvas if needed.
- Check that the source’s audio is audible in OBS’s audio mixer. If the file has no audio, or you do not want its audio, plan accordingly rather than assuming the stream will contain sound.
For one file, Media Source is the direct option. If you need a playlist of files, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop a playlist, but it requires VLC to be installed. Screen capture is not necessary for a local file; use OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source only when the video is playing in another app or you need to capture a display or window.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select an existing setup. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming configuration. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where available in the encoder settings.
- Protect the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and inspect its preview and health indicators. When the preview and setup look right, go live as the YouTube interface requires.
Choose settings and test the actual broadcast
Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to suit both the Mac’s encoding capacity and the upload connection. There is no single bitrate that is right for every file, output resolution and network. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, leave the recommended upload headroom, and watch Live Control Room for stream-health messages.
Before a public broadcast, run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test. Use representative picture motion and audio, check that the preview looks and sounds right, and confirm that the stream is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. YouTube advises preparing the encoder ahead of time and monitoring the stream. Its encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips are useful checks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you need to capture another Mac app
For a file already on the Mac, Media Source avoids the extra steps and potential capture issues of playing it in another application. If you do need display, application or window capture, OBS’s macOS Screen Capture documentation says audio capture is available on macOS 13 and later; macOS 12.3–12.6 is listed as available without audio. That page is dated January 22, 2023, so verify the behavior with your installed OBS and macOS versions and test the audio before going live.
Plan for long loops, archiving and content rights
A Loop checkbox repeats the source file; it does not guarantee that OBS, the Mac, power or the network will remain available indefinitely. Run a meaningful-duration test with the same setup you plan to use, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived when ended; that is an archiving condition, not a promise of uninterrupted streaming for a Mac and OBS setup.

Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s monetization policies separately address reused content and content that is repetitive or mass-produced without distinct creative, educational or other viewer value. A loop by itself does not establish whether a channel or stream qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and avoid assuming that permission to use a file guarantees monetization eligibility.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. Check that the source is active in the scene being streamed.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS against the active stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the stream key has not been reset and that OBS is streaming to the intended service.
- The preview is black or the wrong scene appears: Confirm the correct scene is active and the Media Source is visible and not hidden. Re-select the intended local file if its path changed.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops: Check the Mac’s available upload bandwidth and competing network use. Ensure the connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate, including both primary and backup feeds if applicable; reduce the stream load if the connection cannot sustain it.
- There is no sound: Check whether the media file contains audio and whether OBS’s mixer shows and meters the source. If using macOS screen capture rather than Media Source, verify your macOS version against OBS’s documented audio-capture availability and test again.
- The stream is live but not archived: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours when ended. Do not treat it as a guarantee for longer streams.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Mac and home internet connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
