How to Add Background Music to a Silent Video Loop on YouTube Live

Send a looping video and rights-cleared music through an encoder, preview the combined feed in YouTube Studio, and monitor it for quality and copyright issues.

To add music to a silent video loop on YouTube Live, send the loop as the video input and a rights-cleared track as the audio input through a live-stream encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, then start and monitor the feed. The exact looping and audio-mixing controls depend on your encoder; YouTube does not prescribe one universal setup.

Before you start

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s getting-started guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance before scheduling the broadcast.

Prepare a video and music source

Choose the video file you want to loop and a separate audio source you are authorized to use. If you plan to keep the livestream archive, make sure the music rights also cover that archived video. You do not need to buy a particular mixer or audio interface just to combine digital video and audio; the encoder needs to accept both inputs.

Set up the loop and music in an encoder

  1. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, set up the stream, and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells YouTube to accept your encoder’s feed. Keep the key private.
  2. Configure your encoder’s inputs. Set the silent video file as the video source and configure it to repeat or loop. Add your cleared music file or other permitted audio source as the audio input. The controls vary by encoder, so consult that encoder’s own documentation for its specific loop and audio-mixing steps.
  3. Connect the encoder. Paste the YouTube stream URL and key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Use the stream mode and other settings appropriate to your encoder; YouTube’s guidance does not define universal encoder settings for this particular workflow.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview. Start the encoder’s feed and wait for the preview. Verify that the picture appears, the video repeats as intended, and the music is audible at a suitable level. Test privately or unlisted when appropriate before a public broadcast.
  5. Start and monitor the broadcast. Start the stream from the Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Keep YouTube Studio open and watch for quality warnings or copyright interruptions. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality.
  6. Review the archive, if enabled. After the stream ends, inspect the archived video for a Content ID claim. A license for the live broadcast does not automatically establish that the replay is covered.

Choose music that is cleared for a livestream

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use music in live content. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination if the detected content continues. A stream may still be interrupted even when you have a license if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube also says Content ID claims can be made after a live stream ends if it is archived. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and YouTube’s Terms of Service.

Music source What to check before going live
YouTube Audio Library YouTube describes the library as a source of royalty-free music and sound effects. Check the individual track’s attribution requirements and permitted uses. See YouTube Audio Library guidance.
Your own original music Confirm that you control the relevant rights, including rights held by collaborators and rights to any samples or incorporated material.
Creator Music Availability and permitted use depend on the region and the individual track’s current terms. Do not assume that a track licensed for a monetized video is also cleared for livestreaming or an archived livestream. See YouTube’s Creator Music information.
Paid or royalty-free music catalog Read the actual license for live broadcasts, archived VOD, monetization, territories, and attribution. If the owner uses Content ID, ask them to allowlist your channel before the broadcast.

Credit, a “free” label, or a short excerpt does not by itself grant permission. YouTube cautions that even a few seconds of copyrighted material may raise copyright issues; whether an exception such as fair use or fair dealing applies is fact-specific, and only a court can determine that. See YouTube’s common copyright myths guidance and YouTube’s information about fair use.

Fix common problems

  • No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key shown for the selected YouTube stream. Confirm that the encoder is running and that the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room.
  • The video plays once and stops: The loop setting is controlled by the encoder, not by a universal YouTube Live button. Check that the video source is configured to repeat and that the file remains available to the encoder.
  • The video appears but music is silent: Confirm that the intended audio source is active in the encoder and that its output is reaching the stream. Recheck the Live Control Room preview before starting publicly.
  • YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream: Treat the notice as a rights issue, not as a problem that can be solved by lowering the volume or adding credits. Stop or replace the track unless you have permission for the use; if you do have a third-party license, ask the owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
  • The live broadcast is allowed but the archive receives a claim: Check whether your license covers archived video and resolve any claim through the rights holder or YouTube’s available process. Live-use permission alone does not prove that the archive is covered.
