You Gotta Believe is a 2024 sports drama about a Little League team that dedicates its season to a teammate’s ailing father. It is inspired by the real Fort Worth Westside Little League All-Stars, who reached the 2002 Little League World Series in Williamsport. The team did not win that tournament. Great Lakes, from Louisville, won the 2002 championship, and Fort Worth finished 2–1 in its pool. This is a dramatized feature film, not a documentary, so the story on screen and the historical record need to be read separately.
What the film is
Ty Roberts directed the film, which was released on August 30, 2024 by Well Go USA. Its runtime is 104 minutes and it is rated PG. The studio lists it in the sports, kids and family, and drama categories, in English. The official synopsis describes players who rally around a teammate whose father is seriously ill, and it places that story against the team’s 2002 Little League World Series run and a record-breaking showdown on the field.
Two points matter for readers who come to this site looking for documentary content. First, the film’s medical and personal storyline is dramatic material. The sources available for this guide do not corroborate those personal details as a matter of historical record, so treat them as film story. Second, the film’s claims about its own dramatization come from the studio and the league. They are not independent verification of what happened in each game or in each player’s life.
Cast and roles
- Luke Wilson plays Bobby Ratliff, according to Little League International’s film partnership page.
- Greg Kinnear plays Coach Jon Kelly, according to the same listing.
- The principal cast also includes Sarah Gadon, Lew Temple, Michael Cash, Etienne Kellici, Molly Parker, and Patrick Renna, as listed on the Well Go USA film page.
How closely it follows the real team
Little League International describes the film as based on the real 2002 Westside Little League All-Stars from Fort Worth, Texas. The league says the production was supported through an entertainment licensing partnership and was made in consultation with its staff. In the league’s own words, from its July 11, 2024 announcement:

The 2002 record
The official Little League tournament records for 2002 give the following results for the Fort Worth team, which was listed as Texas West/Fort Worth Westside:
| Stage | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Southwest Region championship game | Won 2–0 over Texas East, earning the trip to Williamsport | Little League International, 2002 tournament records |
| Little League World Series, US pool | 2–1 record | Little League International, 2002 tournament records |
| Little League World Series championship | Won by Great Lakes (Valley Sports American Little League, Louisville, Kentucky) | Little League International, 2002 tournament records |
The film’s title and story do not change that outcome. Fort Worth reached the World Series and played well enough to finish 2–1 in pool play, but it did not win the title.

Why the film is worth knowing about
The film sits at the intersection of a real tournament story and a fictional emotional arc. If you want the factual account, the Little League records above are the clearest source: a regional title, a pool record of 2–1, and a championship won by another team. If you want the film, approach it as a dramatized take on that season, produced with league cooperation, rather than as a record of what happened game by game.
