Yes—Apple TV’s Android app reportedly added Google Cast support in version 2.2, with the update beginning to roll out on December 16, 2025. If your phone has the updated app and your television or streaming device supports Google Cast, you can choose a video on Android and send playback to the TV. The feature is Google Cast, not AirPlay; availability and compatibility may vary by app rollout, device model, and title.
What changed in the Apple TV Android app?
Before this update, Android users could watch Apple TV on their phones but reportedly did not have a conventional Cast button for starting playback on a television. The reported version 2.2 adds a Cast control and a “Cast To” device menu. The button is described as appearing in the app and the full-screen player, though its exact position can change between app versions. The update and its reported features were described by Chrome Unboxed; the available report is secondary coverage, not an Apple changelog.
This sends an Apple TV video through Google Cast. It does not turn the Android phone into an AirPlay sender, and it is not the same as mirroring the entire phone screen. Google describes Cast as a way to send and control video from a phone, tablet, or laptop on a compatible TV. Google’s Chromecast built-in listing describes Cast support on approved Android TV devices.
Which TVs and streaming devices should work?
Look for Google Cast support, also called Chromecast built-in, rather than relying only on a product’s “smart TV” or Android-based label. Likely receiver categories include:

- Chromecast devices that support Google Cast.
- Televisions running Google TV or Android TV with Chromecast built-in.
- Other approved Android TV devices that expose Google Cast.
These are compatibility categories, not a guarantee for every model. Google TV is used across different televisions and streaming devices, and features can vary by manufacturer, model, software, and region. If unsure, check the device specifications or test discovery from another Cast-enabled app. You do not need to buy new hardware if your existing TV already has reliable Cast support or an Apple TV app that meets your needs.
What you need before casting
- An Android phone with the Apple TV app installed and updated to the latest version available in Google Play. The reported Cast update is version 2.2 or later, but rollout timing can differ.
- An Apple Account signed into the app, with access to the video you want to watch. Some content requires an active subscription, rental, or purchase.
- A Google Cast-compatible TV or receiver, powered on and available to the Cast framework.
- The phone and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks, VPNs, router client isolation, and managed Wi-Fi can interfere with device discovery.
How to cast Apple TV from Android
- Open the Google Play Store, find Apple TV, and install any available update.
- Open Apple TV and sign in to the Apple Account that has access to the show or film.
- Make sure the Android phone and television or streaming receiver are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start an eligible video in the Apple TV app.
- Tap the Google Cast icon in the app or full-screen player. Its location may vary by app version.
- Choose your TV, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or other compatible receiver in the “Cast To” list.
- Use the phone’s playback controls to pause, resume, seek, manage subtitles where available, or disconnect.
The reported experience includes a phone mini-player with playback information and a timeline. In a normal Cast session, the selected video plays on the receiver while the phone acts as a controller; the TV is not simply showing a live copy of everything on the phone. Exact controls and behavior can vary with the app build and receiver.

What content and quality can you expect?
The report describes the feature in terms of Apple TV+ programming, but it does not establish that every item in the Apple TV app can be cast. The app may also include rentals, purchases, Apple TV Channels, and promotional or free material. Test the specific title: rights or app limitations may affect whether it starts, and a missing or failed Cast option does not by itself prove that the receiver is broken.
Do not assume that casting guarantees a particular resolution, HDR format, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, surround-sound track, frame-rate matching, or subtitle behavior. Those depend on the title, app, account, receiver, television, and HDMI chain. If a format or subtitle behaves unexpectedly, compare playback in the native Apple TV app on the television, if available.

If the Cast icon or playback is not working
The Cast icon is missing
- Update Apple TV from Google Play, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the phone and the Google TV or Chromecast receiver.
- Confirm both are on the same Wi-Fi network; avoid a guest network and temporarily disable a VPN to test.
- Check whether the router blocks local device discovery through client or AP isolation.
- Install available system updates for the receiver and its Cast or Chromecast built-in components, where offered.
- Try another Cast-enabled app. If it also cannot find the receiver, investigate the network or device; if it works, the issue may be specific to Apple TV or its rollout.
The feature was reported as rolling out, so an update or Cast control may not appear for every user at the same time. Check Google Play again later rather than assuming all regions and devices received it simultaneously.
The receiver appears, but the video will not start
Check that the Apple TV app and receiver software are current, and confirm the signed-in account can play that particular title. The content category may not be eligible, or a network restriction, device certification issue, or incomplete app rollout may be involved. Try a different title and, if available, the same title in the TV’s Apple TV app to narrow down the cause.

Playback buffers or stops
Check Wi-Fi strength near both devices and make sure the phone is not switching unexpectedly between Wi-Fi and cellular data. Guest-network separation or router isolation can disrupt communication. Compare with another Cast app: if that also buffers, focus on the connection or receiver; if only Apple TV is affected, restart the app and receiver and test again.
Subtitles or audio are wrong
Audio tracks, subtitles, surround formats, and HDR are negotiated across the service, app, receiver, and television, so behavior can differ from direct playback. Check the playback controls and compare against the native TV app before changing receiver or network settings.

Casting from Android or using Apple TV directly on the television?
Use phone-to-TV casting when you prefer browsing on Android and controlling playback from the phone. Open the Apple TV app directly on the television instead when you prefer using the TV remote or want to avoid phone-to-receiver discovery. These are separate ways to watch: Cast support does not mean every Google TV model has the native Apple TV app, and it does not replace that app where it is available.
Screen-mirroring apps are a fallback, not an equivalent solution for subscription video. DRM-protected playback can be blocked or appear with a black screen, missing audio, or reduced quality; third-party apps may also include ads, purchases, or additional privacy trade-offs. Native Google Cast support in Apple TV is the more direct option when the control is available.
If your TV lacks Google Cast, a compatible streaming receiver such as the Google TV Streamer is one way to add it. That purchase is unnecessary if your current television already supports Cast or offers a suitable Apple TV app.
