Before its premiere, she promised a wilder, more shocking story; during the season, she described learning Misty’s path script by script; and after the finale, she saw Misty’s most devastating choice as an impulsive attempt to protect someone, with consequences she never intended.
What Ricci said before Season 2
In a November 2022 preview, before viewers had seen the season, Ricci said the first scripts startled the cast. “I can’t really get too much into detail, but I will say the first couple scripts had the entire cast gasping,” she told Entertainment Tonight. She described the season as “More crazy, more shocking,” and “really compelling and fun.” Those were her expectations from the scripts, not a prediction about how audiences would respond.
Ricci also welcomed Elijah Wood to the show. Wood plays Walter, a citizen detective whose season-long story brings him into Misty’s orbit and challenges her. Ricci said it was wonderful to work with him again.
How Ricci learned Misty’s story
While Season 2 was airing, Ricci said she had not been given much advance information about Misty’s trajectory. She generally trusted the writers and approached the story one script at a time, as she explained in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

That approach shaped how she played Misty’s connection with Walter. Ricci found Misty’s sensory-deprivation-tank vision funny: unlike the disturbing visions experienced by some of the other characters, Misty’s felt affirming. In Ricci’s reading, the experience gave Misty room to pursue her friendship with Walter. That relationship offers her a more relatable stake and a grounding connection—something beyond the increasingly intense bond she has with the other survivors.
What Misty’s choices mean to Ricci
After the finale, Ricci described Misty’s harmful decisions as impulsive and immature attempts to get or protect what she wants, rather than the calculated acts of someone plotting evil. She applied that interpretation to both Misty’s destruction of the plane’s black box and the finale’s fatal struggle involving Natalie.

Ricci’s distinction is about motive, not outcome. Misty may believe she is protecting a friend, but that does not make her actions harmless or erase their consequences. In a Vanity Fair interview published May 26, 2023, Ricci summarized Misty’s intent this way: “It wasn’t an evil intention, it was just selfish.”
Season 2 finale: what happens to Natalie
Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. Misty tries to stop Lisa from harming Natalie with a syringe meant for Lisa. In the struggle, Natalie gets in the way and is fatally injected. Ricci’s interpretation is that Misty acts impulsively to protect her friend; the result, however, is Natalie’s death. Intention and consequence collide: Misty’s action is not a carefully planned murder in Ricci’s account, but it is still devastating.

Ricci said filming the scene was difficult and emotionally upsetting. She and Juliette Lewis, who plays Natalie, had grown close, and Ricci described shooting Natalie’s death as torturous. In a separate interview with TheWrap, she described the episode as emotional and Misty as “not OK.”
Ricci also left the meaning of Natalie’s airplane vision uncertain. She felt it could suggest peace, but did not claim a definitive explanation for the show’s supernatural elements.

Ricci’s view of the show’s trauma themes
In a June 2023 conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Ricci said Yellowjackets is “really about trauma and how trauma affects people.” She also noted that people may discount survivors whose responses do not match the version of victimhood they expect or recognize. This is Ricci’s interpretation of the series, not a clinical explanation of the characters.
Her comments across the season trace a shift in focus: the pre-release promise of shock gave way to a character-by-character account of Misty’s relationships, then to a painful distinction between what Misty means to do and what she actually causes. Ricci’s account makes Misty’s tragedy legible without excusing her choices.
