For a bandwidth-constrained YouTube Live stream in XSplit Broadcaster, start with H.264 at 480p and 30 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and choose a video bitrate within YouTube’s 0.4–4 Mbps recommended range for that format. The right point in that range depends on your upload capacity and the amount of motion and detail in your program. Leave about 20% upload headroom above the total outgoing bitrate, test with representative audio and movement, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. If you need an archive, do not rely on one 24-hour event: streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Recommended XSplit settings to start with

This is a cautious, platform-grounded starting configuration, not a tested XSplit preset. XSplit’s available codec and hardware-encoder options can vary with your computer, drivers, and selected streaming service. Check the output controls available on your system and confirm that the chosen option is supported by your YouTube stream.

Setting Starting point How to choose or verify it
Video codec H.264 YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live ingest. H.264 is a broadly compatible starting choice; use another codec only if your XSplit output and YouTube configuration support it.
Resolution and frame rate 480p at 30 fps A lower resolution generally needs less bandwidth than 720p or 1080p. If the connection has room, test 720p30 against the corresponding bitrate guidance below.
Video bitrate Choose within YouTube’s 0.4–4 Mbps recommended range for H.264 480p30 The range is not a guarantee that every value will look good. Start conservatively if bandwidth is tight, then inspect a representative test for detail loss or motion artifacts.
Rate control CBR YouTube specifies CBR for live encoding. XSplit advises against VBR unless the selected platform is known to support it.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo at 128 Kbps Include audio bitrate when estimating total outgoing bandwidth.
Upload capacity Keep approximately 20% headroom over total stream bitrate Use measured upload capacity, not download speed. Other users and devices on a shared network can reduce what is available to the encoder.
Archive Record locally if a complete copy matters YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Static artwork or a fixed shot may tolerate a lower bitrate than fast motion or detailed footage, but that is a content-dependent expectation, not a guarantee. Test using material that resembles the actual broadcast.

Where to set the encoder controls in XSplit

XSplit’s Output Plugin Properties documentation identifies Video Encoding as the area for codec, bitrate, keyframes, frame rate, and resolution. The exact controls can differ by system and output configuration; confirm the options shown in your installed version rather than assuming every machine has the same encoder list. See XSplit’s Output Plugin Properties guide.

  1. Open the properties for the output you use to send the broadcast to YouTube.
  2. In Video Encoding, choose a codec and resolution/frame rate supported by that output. For a low-bandwidth starting point, use H.264 at 480p30 if those options are available.
  3. Set the video rate control to CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
  4. Set the video bitrate within YouTube’s range for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Account for audio and any other outgoing stream data when checking your connection.
  5. Connect the output to your YouTube channel using XSplit’s YouTube setup flow, then confirm the stream is reaching YouTube before making it public. XSplit’s interface may change; use the current controls presented for the selected output.

XSplit describes x264 as CPU-based and notes that hardware codec availability depends on support from the computer and platform. If a hardware option is missing or causes instability, use a supported alternative available in the output controls and test encoder load before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Choose bitrate from YouTube’s guidance and your connection

YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are the current values in YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance; they are guidance ranges, not quality guarantees. Do not treat a bitrate as interchangeable across codecs or formats.

480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

The low end of a published range may produce an image that is not acceptable for your content. Choose a format your connection can sustain, then judge the result in YouTube’s preview with representative motion and detail. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so the encoder bitrate is the feed sent to YouTube, not a promise that every viewer receives that exact bitrate. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current table and requirements.

Estimate the upload capacity you need

Add the video and audio bitrates to estimate the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, then allow about 20% additional upload capacity. For example, a 2 Mbps video setting plus 128 Kbps stereo audio gives roughly 2.128 Mbps before headroom; a connection should have more available upload capacity than that total. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a recommended universal bitrate. YouTube recommends room above the stream bitrate and testing the connection because shared network use can affect capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • If the stream health degrades, reduce the video bitrate or resolution and test again rather than consuming all available upload bandwidth.

Test the stream before leaving it on continuously

  1. Run a private or otherwise suitable test using the same audio, motion, resolution, and encoder settings planned for the broadcast.
  2. Review the YouTube preview and stream health for dropped frames, buffering, or visible compression. Check that speech or music is intelligible and properly synchronized.
  3. Adjust one major variable at a time—bitrate, resolution, or frame rate—so you can tell what improved or worsened.
  4. For a continuous setup, check that the encoder remains connected and that any local recording is growing. These are prudent operational checks, not a guarantee of uptime.

A power loss, network interruption, computer update, or encoder crash can interrupt a PC-based stream. The cited XSplit and YouTube guidance does not establish an XSplit-specific uptime guarantee or recovery procedure.

Will YouTube archive a 24-hour live stream?

Do not assume it will. YouTube says that streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the full program needs to be preserved, make a local recording backup and consider splitting the schedule into separate shorter events rather than depending on a single 24-hour archive. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Copyright and channel considerations for continuous programming

Encoder settings do not determine whether you have the right to broadcast the material. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including music, footage, and still images, and check YouTube’s applicable live-stream rules before scheduling a long-running channel. A stream that stays connected can still face claims, restrictions, or other platform action if its content violates applicable rights or policies. No bitrate or codec setting makes copyrighted material safe to use.

Troubleshooting common low-bitrate stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Stream health warnings or repeated buffering Upload capacity is too close to the total stream bitrate, or the connection is fluctuating or shared. Measure upload performance under typical conditions, preserve headroom, and reduce video bitrate or resolution. Retest rather than relying on download speed.
Blocky image, smearing, or loss of detail Bitrate is too low for the resolution, motion, or visual detail. Test a higher bitrate within YouTube’s range if capacity permits, or lower resolution/frame rate to fit the connection. Evaluate with representative content.
Encoder options differ from a guide or are unavailable XSplit exposes different codec options depending on hardware, drivers, and output configuration. Check the Video Encoding controls for the selected output and use an available codec supported by YouTube. XSplit’s output properties documentation describes the relevant controls.
Audio consumes more bandwidth than expected Total bitrate calculations omitted audio. Include stereo audio at the configured bitrate in the total outgoing bitrate estimate; YouTube’s live guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo.
No complete YouTube archive after a continuous broadcast The event exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns such a stream may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording backup and, when a complete archive is essential, plan shorter events rather than depending on one long archive.
Stream stops after a computer or network interruption A PC-based encoder depends on the computer and connection remaining available. Check power, network stability, and operating-system update behavior; keep a recording backup if needed. Do not assume automatic recovery unless you have verified it for your setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo sends the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
