Their set paired Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Judd’s “No One Else on Earth.” It followed two earlier moments in Russell’s season: an audition of her original song “Skinny” and a solo tribute to her grandmother.
Who is Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter on American Idol?
The contestant was Emmy Russell, the daughter of Patsy Lynn and Philip Russell, and Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter. Russell competed on season 22 of American Idol in 2024. Her family connection was part of the story, but she also spoke about wanting to establish her own voice as an artist.
What did Emmy Russell sing at her audition?
Russell auditioned with “Skinny,” an original song she said was about an eating disorder. In its report on the audition, ABC News / Good Morning America said Russell described her grandmother as family first, rather than as a famous performer. Katy Perry praised Russell’s songwriting and encouraged her to claim her own artistic identity instead of comparing herself with Lynn.
How did Russell honor Loretta Lynn during the season?
On the April 29, 2024 episode, Russell performed a piano version of Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” selected by Perry. Russell explained why the song felt personal: “I love singing from the heart, and I think this is a perfect song for that. I mean, it’s my grandma’s song — can’t get much closer to the heart than your own blood.” ABC News / Good Morning America’s report covered the tribute.

Russell reached the season 22 top five and performed with Judd during the finale, which aired in May 2024. Their medley paired “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Judd’s “No One Else on Earth.” Photographs of Russell and Lynn appeared onstage behind the performers, connecting the tribute to Russell’s family history.
Judd described the performance as a “full circle moment.” As quoted by ABC News / Good Morning America, she said Lynn was “the first woman to hug me in country music.” Judd also said that singing Lynn’s life story with her granddaughter and sending Russell off as an artist in her own right was “so life giving.” The report attributes these remarks to Judd; they convey why the duet mattered to her as well as to Russell.
