Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWWE launched a free version of WWE Network on June 1, 2020. It opened more than 15,000 titles to viewers without requiring a credit card, but it was a curated tier—not the complete Network library and not a free pass to live pay-per-views such as WrestleMania. This is a historical explanation of that launch; WWE’s U.S. streaming arrangements later changed.
What was the free WWE Network?
The offer was a free tier of the existing WWE Network, rather than an entirely separate service. WWE said it was intended to let more fans sample its programming and described the catalog as containing more than 15,000 titles. That figure came from WWE’s June 1, 2020 announcement and referred to available titles, not 15,000 hours, matches or every item in the company’s archive.
WWE also said no credit card was required. In practical terms, the offer was presented as free access to a selection of programming, not a conventional trial that automatically converted into a paid subscription.

What could viewers watch for free?
Recent weekly programming
- Selected recent episodes of Monday Night Raw.
- Selected recent episodes of Friday Night SmackDown.
- Selected recent episodes of NXT.
- Raw Talk, scheduled to stream on Monday nights immediately after Raw at launch.
“Recent” was WWE’s wording; the announcement did not promise a specific delay or a complete historical run of each weekly show.
Original WWE series
- Monday Night War
- Ride Along
- Table for 3
- Photo Shoot
- Story Time
- Other selected original programming in the free catalog.
Selected historical events
The free tier included selected historical WWE pay-per-views and selected NXT TakeOver events. “Selected” is important: WWE did not say that the entire pay-per-view archive or every TakeOver was unlocked.

Free tier versus paid membership
The clearest way to understand the launch is to separate the large free sample from the paid Network proposition.
| Feature | Free version at the June 2020 launch | Paid Network membership at that time |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Not required, according to WWE’s launch materials | Subscription billing applied |
| Weekly shows | Selected recent episodes of Raw, SmackDown and NXT | Broader premium Network access |
| Original series | Selected shows and episodes | Larger on-demand catalog |
| Historical events | Selected pay-per-views and NXT TakeOver events | Broader archive |
| Live premium events | Not the free-tier promise | Core advertised benefit, including live WWE pay-per-views |
| Best suited to | Sampling, documentaries, highlights and selected archive material | Fans wanting live events and the fullest Network experience |
WWE’s historical membership explanation marketed live pay-per-views, including WrestleMania, as paid-member benefits. Therefore, the free version should not be described as including WrestleMania or every other live premium event. The distinction is between selected on-demand programming and the paid service’s live-event proposition, not a claim that every individual program was exhaustively listed as excluded.
For the historical paid-service description, see WWE’s Network membership explainer.

How viewers accessed it in 2020
WWE’s launch instructions were simple: download the WWE App on a supported device, open the free Network content and start watching without entering payment details.
- Download the WWE App.
- Use a compatible television, streaming player, game console, phone, tablet or computer.
- Open the free Network section and select an available title.
The launch-era device list included Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, LG Smart TV, Roku, Sony Android TV, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, and Mac and Windows computers. Those categories describe the 2020 launch information; they are not a guarantee of compatibility or service availability in 2026.

The archive was curated
No. WWE used the phrase “vast portion” and gave a total of more than 15,000 titles, while its examples were selected recent episodes, selected originals, selected historical events and highlights. That is materially different from unlocking the full WWE archive or every live event.
Advertising was not clearly defined
The launch announcement established the no-credit-card requirement, but it did not clearly set out a complete advertising policy or an ad load for every item. It is safer not to assume that the service was universally ad-free or to claim a particular number of commercial breaks.

Who benefited most from the free tier?
- Casual fans: A way to watch highlights, recaps and selected current episodes without subscribing.
- Lapsed fans: An inexpensive route back into WWE history and documentaries.
- Documentary viewers: Access to series such as Monday Night War, Ride Along and Table for 3.
- New viewers: A broad introduction to WWE’s characters, history and weekly programming.
Fans whose priority was live WrestleMania or other major pay-per-views still needed the paid offering described by WWE at the time.
What happened to the standalone Network?
The 2020 free-tier instructions should not be treated as the current U.S. WWE streaming setup. In 2021, WWE announced that Peacock would become the exclusive U.S. streaming home for WWE Network content, with selected programming on Peacock’s free tier and a broader offering on its paid tiers. See WWE Network launches on Peacock and the corporate announcement for that transition.
Current-status note for readers
WWE’s current viewing guide points to multiple services and networks, including ESPN, Netflix, Peacock, USA Network and the CW Network. The correct destination can vary by country, show and event. Check the specific listing on WWE’s current viewing guide or its How to Watch page rather than assuming that the 2020 standalone free tier still operates in the same form.
Bottom line
At launch, WWE’s free Network tier was a substantial but curated sampler: more than 15,000 titles, selected recent shows, original series, historical events and highlights, with no credit card required. It did not make the entire archive or live premium events such as WrestleMania free. Because WWE later moved its U.S. Network distribution to Peacock and now lists several viewing partners, treat the free-tier details as a June 2020 product history and verify present-day availability for the specific WWE program you want.
