After their friendship fractures, Elphaba is demonized and lives in exile, while Glinda becomes a public symbol of goodness in Emerald City. Their paths converge again as events in Oz escalate and a girl from Kansas arrives. This is a premise-level description rather than a scene-by-scene account.
Chu described the sequel’s conflict in NBCUniversal’s November 12, 2025 guide: “It was clear when we separated the two movies that Wicked: For Good needed some additional elements to fully tell the story of these two women and their struggle to come back together. Because now, the world is wedged between their friendship and that is a much harder mechanism to fight through than just cultural or personality differences. Now there is literal structure and government between them. Deep down, we knew that Wicked: For Good was always going to be the bigger story.”

How the film connects to the book and musical
The film’s immediate source is the stage musical, whose music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz and book is by Winnie Holzman. Netflix describes that musical as based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire’s novel is therefore part of the adaptation lineage, rather than the film’s direct source.
