WWE’s ECW revival was the company’s 2006 launch of ECW as a third brand alongside Raw and SmackDown—not a return of the independent Philadelphia promotion under its original ownership. WWE announced the brand on May 25, 2006, and its one-hour live weekly television show debuted on Sci Fi on June 13.
What was the original ECW?
Eastern Championship Wrestling began running in Philadelphia in June 1993, according to Paul Heyman’s later account in WWE’s interview about the birth of Extreme. The organization adopted the Extreme Championship Wrestling name in 1994. WWE’s historical feature dates a defining break with the National Wrestling Alliance to August 27, 1994, when Shane Douglas threw down the NWA championship and declared himself ECW champion.

The original promotion built a regional identity and audience outside WWE. It closed in 2001. That independent history is essential context: WWE’s later use of ECW was a corporate brand revival, not the original promotion resuming operations.
Why did WWE bring ECW back?
WWE said it acquired ECW assets in 2003 and spent the following years reintroducing the identity to its audience through DVDs, books, and pay-per-view events. In its May 25, 2006 announcement, the company cited three ECW DVDs and the success of the June 2005 One Night Stand pay-per-view as evidence of consumer interest.

In WWE’s later oral history of the relaunch, Mick Foley recalled the first ECW pay-per-view’s success as evidence of demand. Tommy Dreamer named Shane McMahon and John Laurinaitis as proponents and pointed to the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD and One Night Stand. Matt Striker summarized his understanding of the rationale: “WWE realized the popularity of ECW. Just because ECW went away doesn’t mean the fanbase did.” These are participants’ recollections and WWE’s stated rationale, rather than independently audited measures of audience demand.
What did WWE launch in 2006?
WWE announced ECW as a third brand alongside Raw and SmackDown, with a product line spanning television, pay-per-views, live events, and licensed consumer goods. The announcement scheduled a one-hour live program on Sci Fi for June 13, 2006, at 10 p.m. ET. WWE’s launch-day interview with Heyman, published June 13, says the first concept had been an internet-only program, before fan demand and network interest expanded the plan.

Heyman said the new show would draw on original ECW ideas while creating new ones. “This won’t be a nostalgia show,” he said at launch. That was his stated intention, not proof that the relaunch reproduced the original promotion’s character.
How was WWE ECW different from the original?
| Aspect | Original ECW | WWE’s 2006 ECW |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and operation | Independent Philadelphia promotion. | WWE brand extension alongside Raw and SmackDown. |
| Creative setting | Developed its own alternative identity and audience. | Produced within WWE’s corporate system and production expectations. |
| Distribution | Rooted in Philadelphia, with a later television history. | Weekly live one-hour show announced for Sci Fi. |
| Purpose | Built its own promotion, stars, and identity. | Extended WWE’s brand portfolio and served ECW fans within WWE. |
WWE’s retrospective records the central tension in the revival. Heyman said WWE’s production obligations and recognizable house style constrained its ability to present ECW as an alternative. Dreamer recalled being told the brand would be different, with smaller venues and a role in developing talent. Foley questioned whether a large company could recreate the original’s grassroots appeal. Joey Styles described the original ECW this way: “ECW was meant to be a throwback to pro wrestling.” Those judgments come from participants interviewed retrospectively, not a single settled explanation of the relaunch’s reception.

The new brand also retained some original talent, but using familiar names and concepts could not make it the same organization: WWE owned and operated the relaunch, and the show was part of WWE’s brand system. The retrospective describes mixed reactions to early episodes and says Heyman left after the December to Dismember event; ECW continued without him.
