CM Punk beat Gunther to win the World Heavyweight Championship—then Seth Rollins cashed in Money in the Bank and took it from him moments later. That was the defining turn of SummerSlam Saturday, August 2, 2025, the first night of the two-night event at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Here is a spoiler-forward ranking of the six scheduled matches, from least to most effective in my judgment. Rollins’s cash-in is reviewed separately because it was a closing segment, not a seventh scheduled match.
How this ranking works
This is an editorial ranking, not an official WWE order or a sourced rating. I weighed match structure and pacing, the clarity and impact of the finish, spectacle, character or storyline payoff, and each bout’s role on the card. WWE’s official results and recaps establish the match outcomes and sequences; the judgments below are mine.
6. Sami Zayn vs. Karrion Kross
Zayn won the grudge match after Kross repeatedly demanded that he admit Kross was right. Kross tried to use a pipe; later, Scarlett offered it to Zayn, who refused. Zayn survived the attempted shortcut and finished with an Exploder Suplex followed by the Helluva Kick.
The weapon gives the conflict a simple character test: would Zayn take the kind of shortcut Kross was pushing? His refusal makes the finish consistent with that premise. Still, among the night’s six bouts, this sequence offers less variety in its closing escalation than the matches ranked above it. The central choice is clear, but the pipe’s role risks drawing attention away from the wrestling payoff rather than sharpening it.

5. Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul vs. Randy Orton and Jelly Roll
McIntyre and Paul defeated Orton and Jelly Roll in Jelly Roll’s first WWE match. Paul’s splash through the announce table supplied the match’s biggest spectacle. Jelly Roll later returned to the ring, chokeslammed Paul and slammed McIntyre. Orton hit McIntyre with an RKO, but Paul delivered the final Paul from Grace on Jelly Roll for the win.
The bout is strongest as a celebrity spectacle: Jelly Roll gets meaningful moments, and the announce-table spot gives the match a clear visual centerpiece. Those attractions are distinct from the tag match’s in-ring construction, which leans on a succession of big moments rather than a particularly intricate finish. Paul taking the deciding fall over Jelly Roll gives the result a clean endpoint, even if it makes the celebrity partner’s loss the closing image.

4. WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez vs. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss
Flair and Bliss won the titles. After Bliss was thwarted on Twisted Bliss, Flair hit a moonsault onto both opponents. A miscommunication followed when Bliss accidentally struck Flair while trying to save her. Rodriguez and Perez nearly won with Tejana Bomb and Pop Rox, but Bliss broke up the pin. Bliss then hit Sister Abigail, and Flair’s Big Boot on Rodriguez secured the victory.
The accidental strike gives a newly paired team a genuine obstacle, and the near-fall for the champions makes their loss feel contested rather than automatic. The recovery is also easy to follow: Bliss stops the pin, then the challengers turn their teamwork into the finish. The sequence makes the new champions’ victory credible, though the rapid pivot from miscommunication to decisive offense leaves little time for the tension to linger.

3. Roman Reigns and Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed
Reigns and Uso won the opener. Breakker and Reed isolated Uso before Reigns entered with a dive. Reed answered by diving onto both opponents, and Reigns speared Breakker through the barricade. Breakker broke up a 1-D attempt; Reigns then got in the way of another spear, allowing Uso to finish Reed with a spear and Uso Splash.
The match keeps shifting its advantage rather than letting either team dominate for long. Its finish makes Uso the emotional center: Reigns’s intervention creates the opening, but Uso supplies the decisive offense. That is a satisfying way to give the opener’s final beat to Uso while still using Reigns as a crucial partner. The high-impact closing run is effective, although its sequence of dives, a barricade spear, and interrupted finish attempts pushes spectacle close to crowding out the tag-team story.

2. WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill
Stratton retained after a match built around reversals and near falls. She hit an outside dive and a swanton; Cargill answered with an Eye of the Storm for a near fall. Cargill later hit Jaded after Stratton attempted a moonsault, but Stratton’s feet reached the ropes. Stratton avoided a super Jaded attempt and won with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever.
The late stretch gives each wrestler a credible route to victory, and the rope-assisted escape changes the match’s direction without making the result feel random. Stratton’s final evasion turns defense into offense, so the finishing moonsault lands as a payoff to the exchange rather than a move arriving from nowhere. This is one of the card’s clearest match structures: momentum changes are legible, and the championship result follows directly from the final reversal.

1. World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther vs. CM Punk
Punk beat Gunther to win the World Heavyweight Championship. The match moved through Gunther’s chops, a Sharpshooter exchange, a frog-splash near fall, powerbombs, and a Sleeper Hold. Punk escaped and hit two GTS moves to take the title. WWE’s recap said Gunther appeared to have a broken nose after being pulled from the announce table; that is the recap’s description, not a confirmed medical diagnosis.
This is the strongest scheduled match because its finish pays off a sustained struggle for control. The holds and heavy offense repeatedly make the outcome feel in doubt, then Punk’s escape and pair of GTS moves provide an emphatic championship-winning ending. The double move is a clear punctuation mark: it tells the viewer that Punk had to go beyond his first attempt to overcome Gunther. The victory feels complete—until the closing segment overturns its meaning.
Closing segment: Seth Rollins cashes in
Immediately after Punk’s win, Rollins appeared in crutches and a knee brace, discarded them, and struck Punk repeatedly with the Money in the Bank briefcase. He cashed in his contract, hit a Stomp, and beat Punk for the championship. WWE’s recap characterized Rollins’s injury presentation as a ruse.
As a separate angle rather than a seventh scheduled match, the cash-in is the night’s sharpest turn. It transforms the emotional payoff of Punk’s victory into a brief reign and makes Rollins’s deception the final image. The quick contract conversion is effective precisely because it interrupts the expected celebration instead of extending the main event into another full match. The two title changes belong together in any account of the show: Punk won the championship from Gunther, and Rollins immediately took it from Punk.
