For a Wowza-to-YouTube live stream, set a fixed two-second keyframe interval, use constant bitrate (CBR), and choose the YouTube-bound video bitrate from YouTube’s live encoder guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. The exact controls depend on whether you use Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine, so confirm the settings available in your deployment.
Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | Recommended approach | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube-bound stream |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube-bound stream |
| Video bitrate | Choose the bitrate range matching codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance | YouTube-bound output rendition |
| Delivery protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery | Wowza output to YouTube |
| Ingest credentials | Use the stream URL and key generated in YouTube Studio | Wowza destination configuration |
YouTube’s stated keyframe guidance is “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” YouTube Help provides the current bitrate table; match its row to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as correct for every stream.
Set up the YouTube-bound Wowza output
- Confirm which Wowza product you are configuring. Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Engine are different products; controls and setup steps should not be assumed to match. The linked Wowza integration guide covers sending a selected Wowza Video output rendition to YouTube.
- Prepare the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that destination. Use the URL and key in Wowza’s YouTube destination settings.
- Select the delivery protocol. Choose RTMPS when available for encrypted delivery, or another protocol supported by the YouTube destination and your Wowza setup. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS guidance for live delivery.
- Choose the output rendition and codec. Decide the resolution and frame rate you intend viewers to receive, then identify the corresponding codec, resolution, and frame-rate entry in YouTube’s live encoder table.
- Set output rate control and bitrate. Configure CBR and select a video bitrate within the matching YouTube ingest range. Keep the audio settings appropriate to your production and confirm the final stream preview in YouTube Studio before relying on it continuously.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. Enter a fixed two-second interval if the relevant Wowza encoder/output exposes that control. If your selected output cannot set it directly, verify the produced stream’s behavior and the product documentation rather than assuming a source-side setting carries through unchanged.
- Start the output and check YouTube Studio. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream, reports no ingest warnings, and displays the expected resolution and frame rate before treating the configuration as ready for a 24/7 run.
Wowza’s guide to streaming to YouTube Live from Wowza Video describes selecting an output rendition and entering YouTube’s stream URL and key. In that workflow, YouTube performs transcoding; the bitrate you configure for the YouTube-bound rendition is the relevant ingest target.
Keep source bitrate separate from YouTube ingest bitrate
A 24/7 Wowza workflow can have two encoding stages: a source encoder sends video into Wowza, and Wowza sends an output rendition to YouTube. Their bitrate settings refer to different legs of the stream. The source bitrate should be sufficient for Wowza’s input and the quality you need there; the YouTube-bound bitrate should follow YouTube’s ingest guidance for the output codec, resolution, and frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wowza Technical Support lists 1080p source encoder guidance with a supported range of 3,200–6,000 Kbps and a recommended video bitrate of 4,400 Kbps. Those are Wowza source-encoder references, not substitutes for YouTube’s ingest table. Wowza’s source encoding best-practices page gives 6,000 Kbps as an example maximum source video bitrate for 1080p and recommends one- or two-second keyframe intervals. Use these figures only when configuring the source stage, and verify the YouTube-bound output separately.
Configure a 24/7 channel without assuming every Wowza plan is the same
Wowza Video’s documented 24×7 channel setup runs until it is stopped manually or by a schedule. The same setup documentation says 4K is not supported for the described 24×7 configuration. These are specific to the documented Wowza Video service setup; do not apply them automatically to Wowza Streaming Engine or another Wowza plan. Check the current product and subscription documentation for your deployment before choosing a resolution or planning unattended operation.

Check copyright and channel eligibility before looping content
Correct encoder settings do not establish that you have the right to broadcast the video, music, or other material in a continuous stream. Before running a loop, confirm that you control the rights or have permission for the content and that your planned use complies with YouTube’s current live-stream policies. A technically healthy ingest can still face interruption or channel consequences if the content violates applicable rules.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube reports a keyframe or ingest warning: Set the YouTube-bound output to a fixed two-second keyframe interval and avoid intervals longer than four seconds. Confirm that the setting controls the output sent to YouTube, not only the source into Wowza.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube flags bitrate: Check that output bitrate is within the YouTube table’s range for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Also inspect the source-to-Wowza leg; insufficient or inconsistent input can affect the downstream output.
- Resolution or frame rate differs from the plan: Check the selected Wowza output rendition and compare its actual codec, resolution, and frame rate with the row used to select YouTube ingest bitrate.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Verify that the stream URL and key were copied from the intended YouTube Studio destination, that the key has not been changed, and that the configured protocol is supported for that destination.
- A 24/7 channel stops or cannot be configured at the intended resolution: Check the specific Wowza product, channel setup, and subscription limits. The documented Wowza Video 24×7 setup has its own run behavior and does not support 4K.
