You can run a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live loop from a cloud desktop by installing OBS on the remote machine, adding the video as a looping Media Source, and connecting OBS to a YouTube stream URL and key. The cloud desktop lets the machine do the work while your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: you must test the specific desktop, encoder, network path, and scene you plan to use.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start time. YouTube’s live-stream setup guide explains the process.
- A cloud desktop you can access remotely, with an operating system supported by OBS and an encoding configuration suitable for your video, resolution, frame rate, and scene.
- The video file stored where OBS on the remote desktop can access it. OBS Media Source uses a local file path, so do not assume a cloud-storage mount or instance disk will persist through a stop or rebuild unless your provider confirms it.
- OBS Studio, installed on the cloud desktop from the official OBS download page.
Cloud providers document Windows virtual desktops and GPU-backed workstations, but their product descriptions are not tested OBS recipes. AWS, for example, documents Windows 10/11 and Windows Server desktop options in its Research and Engineering Studio documentation, as well as graphics-oriented G4 instances. Google Cloud documents GPU-accelerated Windows workstations. Availability, GPU and hardware-encoder access, network capacity, persistence, and runtime controls vary by configuration and provider.
Choose and test a cloud desktop for the actual workload
There is no universal cloud desktop size established for OBS looping. OBS says system requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and warns that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Use the OBS system requirements guidance and its Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as starting points, not as proof that a remote machine will sustain your planned broadcast.
Before committing to a long run, compare candidate configurations on the factors that affect this workload:

- Whether the desktop exposes the GPU and hardware encoder you intend to use, if any.
- Outbound network capacity and stability, not just the machine’s advertised compute capability.
- How you reconnect to the desktop if your local session closes, and whether the provider can stop or shut down the machine automatically.
- Whether the video file, OBS scenes, and settings survive a stop, rebuild, or host change.
- Geographic availability and total cost for the full runtime, including storage or other provider charges that apply to your configuration.
Run the exact scene and encoding path you plan to use, for a representative duration, before relying on it. The cloud-provider pages above describe workstation capabilities; they do not certify a particular configuration for a nonstop OBS stream.
Prepare the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Review the stream’s title, audience, visibility, and scheduling settings before connecting the encoder. YouTube notes that default privacy can depend on the account holder’s age; you can change the privacy setting.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public notes, or logs.
- If this is the channel’s first encoder stream, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation period of up to 24 hours.
Use the stream URL and matching key for the selected stream. A key for a different stream will not connect to the one you intend to broadcast.

Set up OBS to loop the video
- Connect to the cloud desktop and launch OBS. Create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and select the video file on the remote machine. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; a listed format alone does not guarantee every file will play correctly.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. This restarts the file when playback reaches its end.
- Set Show nothing when playback ends and Restart playback when source becomes active to match how you want the source to behave if it is stopped, hidden, or activated again.
- Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Play the source through a full loop and confirm the transition at the end, the first frame after restart, and the sound level. Add overlays or additional sources only if needed; extra scene complexity can increase the workload.
If the media source shows a black frame, has no sound, or fails to restart, verify the selected file path on the remote machine and the source properties before changing encoder settings.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list, or choose the custom server option and enter the stream URL supplied by YouTube.
- Enter the matching YouTube stream key. Keep it private and confirm the intended stream is selected in Live Control Room.
- In Settings → Output and Settings → Video, choose an encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the cloud desktop can sustain. Run OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard if you need a starting point, then test the result under the real workload.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings for protocol, codec, and resolution-specific bitrate recommendations.
- Start with a test stream or an unannounced test window. Include representative movement and audio, check the picture and sound on YouTube, and read Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before promoting the broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That is YouTube’s setting recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular cloud desktop or network can sustain it. Choose settings for the actual outbound capacity and check the current bitrate table for your target resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends a connection speed appropriate to the selected bitrate.

Start the broadcast and plan for interruptions
- With the Media Source playing and stream settings saved, click Start Streaming in OBS.
- Open Live Control Room and confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports acceptable stream health. Use the preview to check framing, audio, and playback before you make the stream public or share its watch page.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect as appropriate and configure the cloud provider’s runtime and shutdown controls deliberately. Arrange a way to reconnect to the desktop and check YouTube’s stream health during the run.
- Test what happens after a dropped network connection, OBS restart, desktop disconnect, and source restart. OBS reconnect settings may help with some interruptions, but they do not guarantee recovery from every failure.
A remote desktop session closing is not the same as the cloud machine shutting down, but behavior depends on the provider and its configuration. Confirm that the VM or workstation remains running after you disconnect, and account for provider-level autostop or scheduled-shutdown policies.
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. That limit is not a promise that a longer broadcast will be archived, nor does archiving mean the OBS loop itself will continue without interruption. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and plan your recording and continuity needs separately.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the URL/key does not match the selected stream. | Check channel activation, then compare the OBS stream URL and key with the stream selected in Live Control Room. |
| Stream connects, but YouTube reports poor health or viewers see buffering | The bitrate exceeds what the cloud desktop’s outbound connection can sustain, or performance varies under load. | Review stream-health messages, lower the bitrate or output settings, and retest with the actual scene and network path. |
| OBS is choppy, overloaded, or drops frames | The selected encoder, frame rate, resolution, or scene complexity is too demanding for the configured desktop. | Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, simplify the scene or reduce output settings, and test again. A GPU label alone does not establish OBS performance. |
| The video is black, missing, or stops instead of looping | The file path is unavailable on the remote desktop, or the Media Source properties are not set as intended. | Confirm the file exists at the path OBS uses, reselect it, enable Loop, and test playback through the end of the file. |
| The stream stops after you close your remote window | The cloud machine or OBS process may have stopped, or the provider applied an autostop policy. | Reconnect and check the VM’s running state, OBS, and provider runtime controls. Test disconnect behavior before depending on it. |
| OBS reconnects but YouTube does not resume as expected | A reconnect setting cannot repair every encoder, network, or cloud-instance failure. | Check OBS’s status, YouTube stream health, the current key and endpoint, and the provider’s machine state; restart the encoder or stream as needed. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Looping a file technically does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Before streaming a documentary, music, film, or other third-party material, confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s rules for copyrighted content and reused content. A live broadcast can be subject to copyright enforcement even when the video is prerecorded; do not assume that credit, a disclaimer, or a loop makes unlicensed material permissible.
For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist alongside YouTube’s own current policies. Your channel’s eligibility and monetization status remain subject to YouTube’s rules and decisions.

Cost and operating trade-offs
A cloud desktop shifts the machine and network workload off your home computer, but it is a provider service whose cost depends on the chosen configuration and runtime. Compare the full cost for the actual broadcast duration, including any compute, storage, and data-transfer charges that apply. No universal OBS desktop price or cost estimate follows from the provider documentation: compare the configurations and regions you can actually use, then test before committing to a long run.
If you need to estimate how long your media will take to upload before moving it to the remote machine, StreamNeo offers a free upload-time calculator. For a broader comparison of running a computer locally versus using a cloud service, use its cloud vs PC cost calculator.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an OBS desktop: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and supports 24/7 looping and playlists. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
