YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and an archived stream may receive a claim after it ends. Check the specific film version, its audio and other additions, and the territories where it will be available before streaming.
What can happen during the livestream and afterward?
YouTube describes two separate risks. During a livestream, its systems scan for matches to third-party content. If a match is identified, YouTube may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you archive the stream, YouTube says a Content ID claim may be made after the live stream is complete. Avoiding an interruption while live therefore does not establish that the archive is clear. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams explains both processes.
YouTube also describes a separate live-matching feature used by certain rights-holder partners to identify copies of their own live streams. That partner feature does not create claims; it uses warnings and possible interruption or termination. It is distinct from the ordinary scanning of a creator’s stream for third-party matches. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes the distinction.
Why public-domain status is not a claim-free guarantee
YouTube lists public-domain footage, recordings, and compositions among examples that are ineligible as Content ID references. That is a rule about what can be used as a Content ID reference; it is not a promise that every copy labeled public domain will avoid a match, interruption, or claim. YouTube also cautions that verifying public-domain status can be complicated and that none of its listed safe-use options guarantees that a claim will be avoided. See YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance and its copyright overview.

The underlying film is only one part of the rights check
A film’s underlying work may be public domain while a particular transfer, soundtrack, restoration, colorization, subtitles, narration, or other added material has a different rights status. Check the actual file or release you intend to stream, not just the film’s title or age. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for the content, including music rights. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Rights can differ by territory
Public-domain rules vary by country or region, and YouTube says there is no official complete list of works in the public domain. A conclusion about one territory does not automatically establish the status of the film everywhere your stream can be viewed. The title alone does not identify a film, its publication history, its source copy, or the intended territories, so no work-specific legal conclusion can be made here. YouTube’s copyright overview discusses territorial variation and verification.

Check the specific copy before going live
- Identify the exact version. Record the film title, the source file or disc, and the person or organization that supplied it. Note whether it is an original release, transfer, restoration, or later edition.
- Check the rights basis in each relevant territory. Research the public-domain status of the particular film where the stream will be available. Do not rely only on its age, a search result, or a label on a download.
- Review audio and additions separately. Check the soundtrack and any added music, narration, subtitles, colorization, or other material. The rights status of the underlying film does not settle the status of every element in a particular copy.
- Keep supporting records. Retain the source details and evidence supporting your conclusion for each relevant element. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights.
- Decide whether to keep an archive. An archived livestream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Choose whether to retain the recording with that possibility in mind.
If YouTube interrupts the stream or a claim appears
During the live broadcast
If YouTube identifies a match, follow the on-screen notice and check the stream’s status in YouTube Studio. A warning or interruption is a platform action, not a final ruling that the film is protected or that your public-domain conclusion is wrong. Do not assume that continuing to send the same material will restore the stream; YouTube says a stream can be interrupted or terminated if matched content remains. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
After the stream
Inspect the claim in YouTube Studio, including the claimant and the claimed segment. A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or a copyright strike. Depending on the claimant’s policy and territory, a claim may monetize, track, or block a video. YouTube explains these outcomes in Learn about copyright claims.

You can leave a claim in place, remove or edit the claimed segment where the available tools allow it, or dispute it if you have a valid basis. Dispute only when you can support the reason—for example, that you have the necessary rights or that the match is mistaken. Giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize is not by itself a valid dispute reason. YouTube does not decide whether a copyright exception applies; for a dispute based on public-domain status, use evidence specific to the work, version, and relevant territories. For an uncertain legal question, consider legal advice. YouTube’s dispute guidance explains the process and limits.

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It can handle the technical work of looping a video without leaving a computer running, but it cannot establish that a film or soundtrack is public domain, prevent Content ID matching, or guarantee a claim-free broadcast. The rights check remains the streamer’s responsibility. Learn about StreamNeo if you need cloud-based playback rather than a computer that stays on.
