Wonder Man makes a persuasive case for a different kind of MCU series: less superhero spectacle, more Hollywood satire, acting, and an unexpectedly warm friendship. Whether it is the franchise’s best television since Loki is a matter of taste, and its pacing is not beyond criticism—but its focus gives superhero-weary viewers a genuine change of pace.
What is Wonder Man about?
Simon Williams is a struggling actor who meets Trevor Slattery, an out-of-work actor. When director Von Kovak plans a remake of the in-universe superhero film Wonder Man, Simon pursues the lead role while keeping his own powers secret. The premise puts show business and the effort of performing at the center of the story, rather than treating Hollywood as a quick stop on the way to the next battle. Disney’s series announcement lays out the setup.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Simon, Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor, and Zlatko Burić plays Von Kovak. Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest created the series; Guest is showrunner. Disney+’s UK series page lists the cast and credits.
Why it feels different from many MCU shows
Hollywood and friendship take priority over superhero action
Reviews from The Guardian and TV Guide describe a low-key, character-first series in which superheroics largely stay in the background. The Hollywood setting gives the show room to play with auditions, ambition, and the gap between an actor’s public persona and private self. The relationship between Simon and Trevor supplies the emotional center: two performers with different temperaments and careers trying to make their way in the same industry.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That emphasis is also why the series can work for viewers who are not steeped in the MCU. The Los Angeles Times notes that its show-business details do not require deep franchise knowledge. Simon’s powers and the film-within-the-show provide MCU context, but the central appeal is the actors’ pursuit of a role and the bond that develops between them.
The leads make the quieter approach work
Several reviewers, including The Guardian, TV Guide, TechRadar, TIME, and The Daily Beast, respond positively to Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley or to their chemistry. That praise is critical judgment, not a measured audience consensus, but it identifies the series’ clearest strength: the central pairing has enough character and comic contrast to hold attention when action is scarce.

Is it the cure for superhero fatigue?
It can be, if what has worn you down is the familiar escalation toward another large-scale fight. Wonder Man changes the emphasis: character, male friendship, and the film business matter more than sustained superhero action. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian urged fatigued viewers to “banish it,” but that enthusiasm is a critic’s response, not proof that the show will work for everyone.
The trade-off is straightforward. Viewers seeking a character-led comedy-drama with an MCU connection may welcome the restraint; viewers expecting frequent action or franchise spectacle may find the series too quiet. The Daily Beast also argues that some fantastical elements are downplayed so much that the show can barely feel like an MCU entry. Its distinctiveness is a strength only if that is the kind of departure you want.

What are the main reservations?
The most pointed criticism concerns pacing and how fully the story develops its ideas. TheWrap objects to the half-hour season’s all-at-once release and argues that the story runs longer than its substance warrants. The Daily Beast likewise finds some narrative details underdeveloped. So while critics often agree that the premise and leads feel fresh, they do not all agree that the season makes the most of them.

How it connects to Marvel Comics
Simon Williams is not a character invented for the series. Disney’s character overview describes his comics history as a super-powered Avenger whose life is also tied to acting. Readers curious about that background can explore Disney’s Wonder Man character information or look for Wonder Man comics; no particular edition is necessary to follow the show.
Verdict
Wonder Man is a distinctive MCU detour built around two actors, their friendship, and the absurdities of Hollywood. Its low-key style and strong central pairing make the “cure for superhero fatigue” claim plausible for viewers hungry for character over spectacle. Uneven pacing and underdeveloped story details keep the series from being an unquestionable best-in-franchise pick, but it earns its place as one of the MCU’s more unusual television experiments.
