The documentary tells the story of Nubia Way, a Black housing co-operative built in Downham, Lewisham, in the 1990s, and its community self-build model. The screening is part of the Gallery’s Earthly Paradise programme for Black History Month 2026.
What was Nubia Way?
Nubia Way was a housing co-operative developed in Downham, Lewisham, in the 1990s by Fusions Jameen. William Morris Gallery describes it as London’s first Black housing co-operative. Its story brings together community-led housing and the discrimination Black British communities faced in accessing homes.
How did its self-build model work?
The project followed Walter Segal principles: residents built their own homes in exchange for long-term discounted rents. Rather than treating self-build simply as a construction method, the event presents it as a way for a community to shape its housing in response to exclusion from the wider housing system.
What does the documentary cover?
Tomorrow Is Built Today uses interviews with original self-builders, historians, architects and economists to explore Nubia Way and the wider context of self-building. The Gallery frames the film around how Black British communities responded to housing discrimination and how people can come together to imagine and build alternatives amid a housing crisis.

The screening is part of Earthly Paradise: Radical Living in the UK, an exhibition examining homes and communities connected to art and activism across Britain over two centuries. It also considers how class and money shape access to spaces for alternative ways of living. The Gallery’s event archive identifies the screening as part of its Black History Month 2026 programme.
By pairing the Nubia Way story with a conversation about House for Artists, the event places a 1990s community self-build co-operative alongside a contemporary artist residential project. The Gallery’s framing invites discussion of who builds or manages housing, how people gain access to it, and how shared responsibility can foster community and creative life.
