The film is a fictional musical feature, not a documentary. It continues the story from Wicked (2024), which adapted the first act of the stage show.

Universal Pictures lists the film’s US theatrical release as November 21, 2025. Release dates for theatrical films vary by country, and official regional pages can show a different day. The official Malaysia page, for example, lists a different date, as shown below.

The film’s material traces back to the stage musical, which Winnie Holzman wrote the book for, and that musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s 2001 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The novel is the origin of the story, not a novelization of the film.
Wicked: For Good plot (spoiler-light)
Elphaba and Glinda are estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. Elphaba, known as the Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile while fighting for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals and trying to expose the truth about the Wizard. Glinda has become a public symbol of Goodness in the Emerald City and is preparing to marry Fiyero.

Glinda’s attempt to reconcile Elphaba with the Wizard fails and drives the two friends further apart. The fallout reaches Boq and Fiyero and puts Nessarose in danger after a girl from Kansas arrives in Oz. As an angry mob turns on Elphaba, the friends have to face what their friendship means and whether they can change themselves and Oz.
