Check the event state first, then verify the stream URL and key, YouTube’s health messages, output format, protocol, and outbound connection.
First, distinguish sending from going live
There are several separate stages: FFmpeg reads and sends packets; YouTube receives and accepts the ingest; Live Control Room displays an incoming preview; and, for a scheduled stream, you start the event by clicking Go live. A running FFmpeg process proves only that the process is running; it does not prove the feed reached the intended YouTube stream or that the event is live.
YouTube’s documented sequence for an encoder-based scheduled stream is to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain that workflow.
Troubleshoot in this order
1. Check the intended event and preview
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check whether an incoming preview appears. If it does, click Go live for a scheduled event and check the event state again.
- If there is no preview, troubleshoot the ingest connection below rather than repeatedly clicking Go live.
Do not assume a fixed preview delay: the official guidance does not specify one time threshold that applies to every encoder and network.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Match the stream URL and key
Compare the destination configured in FFmpeg with the Stream URL shown for that exact stream in Live Control Room. Confirm that the stream key belongs to the same stream and has not been reset since you copied it. YouTube uses the key as the encoder’s credential and to direct and accept the feed; if you reset it, update the encoder with the new key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Keep the key private. Do not include it in public logs, screenshots, help requests, or example commands.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Read YouTube’s health indicator and error messages
Check the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room for errors next to the stream health indicator. Messages may be marked critical or moderate and include timestamps, so make sure a warning belongs to the current FFmpeg run rather than an earlier attempt. YouTube’s error-message guide describes these signals.
If YouTube reports an incorrect RTMP stream format, its guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Inspect the actual output codecs; a file extension or the format of the source file does not establish what FFmpeg is sending. For broader diagnostics, consult YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting page.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Verify RTMP or RTMPS matches the selected endpoint
Use the protocol and endpoint provided for the stream. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default even when you intend to use RTMPS; an RTMPS connection needs an rtmps URL and an encoder that supports the protocol. If YouTube reports an SSL error and the endpoint is otherwise correct, its guidance suggests trying port 443. That is a protocol-specific troubleshooting step, not a universal fix for an offline status. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
5. Check FFmpeg’s pacing and output
When FFmpeg reads a file, -re paces input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). FFmpeg’s documentation gives this generic RTMP example:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
It is an illustration of file pacing, not a guaranteed YouTube command. Use the URL and key structure shown for your intended stream and an output compatible with its ingest protocol. The option does not verify the destination, validate credentials, or start the scheduled YouTube event. FFmpeg warns against applying a low read rate to a real capture device or live input because it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation and its protocol documentation.
6. Test outbound capacity and connection stability
Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% bitrate headroom. Its bandwidth calculation includes the primary and backup stream bitrates plus that headroom. A connection disruption can break a stream, so also investigate whether the outbound network path is stable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use the signal to narrow down the cause
- Preview is present, event is not live: for a scheduled encoder stream, complete the Go live step.
- No preview and the URL or key does not match: correct the destination or key for the intended stream.
- YouTube shows a format error: inspect the actual output codecs; YouTube’s guidance for the incorrect RTMP format calls for H.264 video and AAC audio.
- YouTube reports an SSL or protocol problem: verify whether the selected endpoint is RTMP or RTMPS, whether the encoder supports it, and follow the specific SSL guidance.
- Encoder output looks healthy but reception is unstable: check available outbound bandwidth, recommended headroom, and network interruptions.
