Your Attention Please screened at Albuquerque’s National Hispanic Cultural Center on October 2, 2026, bringing a documentary about youth safety and social media together with New Mexico’s legal cases against Meta. The film follows advocate Kristin Bride’s push for stronger protections for children online. The screening’s panel included New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and state Sen. Antonio Maestas.
What is Your Attention Please about?
Written and edited by Jack LeMay and directed by Sara Robin, Your Attention Please follows Kristin Bride’s advocacy for precautions for children on social media, including the federal Kids Online Safety Act. The film examines concerns about social media, youth safety and mental health through Bride’s efforts to press Congress for action.
Bride has described her son Carson’s experience with cyberbullying on Snapchat before his death by suicide in 2020. That account is hers, as reported by Source New Mexico; it should not be read as an independently established finding that cyberbullying caused his death. If you or someone you know is in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Why was the documentary screened in New Mexico?
LeMay told Source New Mexico that the state’s recent courtroom confrontations with Meta made it a significant setting for the film. “New Mexico is a small state with big state energy,” he said. The October 2 screening was followed by a panel with Bride, Torrez and Maestas, connecting the film’s focus on youth online safety to policy and litigation in the state.

Torrez said, “The most important thing that we could do to help our kids is to bring about the change that we weren’t seeing in Washington.” Director Sara Robin described a shift in the possibility of legal action against technology companies: “For the longest time, we thought it may not be possible to take these companies to court,” she said. “We’re seeing that change now.”
What have New Mexico’s cases against Meta established?
The state’s three proceedings concern different legal claims and remedies. Two addressed alleged harms to young users; a separate September case concerned Facebook’s practices under state consumer-protection law. The amounts below are not interchangeable: one is a jury award, one a judge-ordered fund, and one a penalty request still awaiting a court decision.

| Proceeding | What the jury or judge decided | Amount and status |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 youth mental-health case | A Santa Fe jury found Meta misrepresented risks to teen users’ mental health. | The jury awarded New Mexico $375 million, according to Source New Mexico’s 2026 reporting. |
| August 2026 youth-harm remedy | First Judicial District Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered an abatement fund intended to address harms to youth. | The order required Meta to pay $567 million, according to Source New Mexico. Meta said it would appeal. |
| September 2026 Facebook consumer-protection case | A separate jury found Facebook had willfully engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices involving user-data collection, misinformation, hate speech and preferential treatment for government figures. | Source New Mexico reported close to 44 million violations. The judge had not yet set the penalty in the September reporting. |
The September penalty is not a final award
New Mexico sought the maximum statutory penalty of $5,000 per violation in the September case. Source New Mexico’s September 25 report described a potential total above $219 billion if the maximum were applied to the reported violation count. Its October 5 screening story reported that the state later requested up to $40 billion. These are different descriptions of the possible penalty and the state’s request, not a final judgment; the judge still had to decide the amount.
Meta disputed the September verdict. A spokesperson told Source New Mexico, “We disagree with the verdict and will continue to defend ourselves against efforts to distort our record. Meta’s platforms are forums for free expression.”

What policy changes are being proposed?
New Mexico’s proposed online-safety legislation
Torrez and other officials announced concepts for an Online Safety and Accountability Act intended for the 2027 legislative session. The announced proposals include chronological feeds, a two-hour daily default limit, notifications silenced overnight and during school hours, and blocking profiles that exhibit sexual extortion or grooming behavior. These are proposals, not rules currently in force.
Planned school phone restriction
Maestas said he and Sen. Crystal Brantley planned to reintroduce Senate Bill 23, a bell-to-bell restriction on phone use in schools that did not advance in the prior legislative session. The plan to reintroduce it is Maestas’s statement, not an enacted policy or a guarantee of passage.
