By December 2024, Willis had reversed course: he said Trump appeared to genuinely enjoy “Y.M.C.A.” and that he did not want to stop its continued use. Willis defended that decision while rejecting the claim that he and co-writer Jacques Morali wrote the song as a gay anthem—a claim that does not erase the song’s later importance to LGBTQ audiences.
Why did Victor Willis let Trump use “Y.M.C.A.”?
Willis’s position changed over time. In 2020, he called on Trump to stop using Village People music, including “Y.M.C.A.” On December 2, 2024, he said he no longer wanted to prevent the song’s use, explaining that Trump seemed to enjoy it. ABC News reported Willis’s explanation that he asked BMI “not to terminate [Trump’s] political use license because he seemed to be bringing so much joy to the American people with this use of ‘Y.M.C.A.’” (ABC News, January 14, 2025; San Francisco Chronicle, December 3, 2024.)
So, did Willis defend Trump using “Y.M.C.A.”? Yes: he publicly defended allowing its continued political use, citing Trump’s apparent enjoyment of the song. That decision concerned use at political events; it was not a blanket statement that he endorsed Trump’s politics.
What did Willis say the song meant?
Willis disputed the description of “Y.M.C.A.” as a gay anthem and said that was not what he and co-writer Jacques Morali intended. He interpreted the lyric “hang out with all the boys” as referring to Black male friendship and shared activities. That is Willis’s account of the song’s authorship and meaning, not a definitive account of how every listener understands it. (San Francisco Chronicle; The Guardian, December 5, 2024.)

Authorial intent and cultural reception are different questions
Willis’s stated intention does not cancel the song’s cultural history. The Village People became closely associated with gay culture, and “Y.M.C.A.” has been widely embraced and understood as a gay anthem. The two points can coexist: an author may describe what he intended, while audiences develop meanings and uses that extend beyond that intention. (The Guardian; NPR via North Country Public Radio, January 20, 2025.)
Did the Village People perform at Trump’s inauguration?
Yes. The Village People announced performances at Trump-related inaugural events in January 2025. In its announcement, the group said “we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics.” Willis later described the aim as bringing people together. Speaking to NPR, he said, “We’re trying to make people come together and unite the country.” He also acknowledged that fans reacted both negatively and positively to the group’s choice to perform. The performances and Willis’s explanation describe the group’s stated rationale; they do not establish support for every Trump policy.
What did the music license allow?
ABC reported that Willis contacted BMI and asked it not to terminate Trump’s political-use license. The Chronicle separately reported Willis’s claim that the campaign had obtained a political-use license. These reports concern permission for political-event performance; they do not establish that one license cleared every possible use of the composition, a particular recording, or audiovisual material in every format. The scope of rights depends on the use, and the available reporting does not spell out all applicable permissions.
