Why Trump’s AI Video of Hakeem Jeffries Was Called Racist

On September 29, 2025, President Donald Trump shared an AI-manipulated political video shortly after meeting with congressional leaders about the approaching federal government shutdown. The clip fabricated or altered Senator Chuck Schumer’s voice and depicted House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries with a digitally added sombrero and handlebar-style mustache while mariachi-style music played.

Jeffries called the video “fake,” “disgusting,” racist, and later a “xenophobic stereotype.” Trump’s defenders, including Vice President JD Vance, described it as a joke or political satire. The underlying facts are comparatively clear: the video was not an authentic recording of Schumer and Jeffries making the statements attributed to them. The dispute concerns what the imagery meant and whether it crossed from political mockery into racist stereotyping.

What Trump’s video showed

The video appeared to use footage of Schumer and Jeffries from the White House meeting, but altered the presentation with synthetic or manipulated elements. Schumer appeared to speak in a fabricated or modified voice and was made to deliver vulgar and inflammatory remarks about Democrats, immigrants, and the Democratic base. Jeffries appeared beside him with a sombrero and handlebar-style mustache added digitally. Mariachi-style music accompanied the clip.

Those statements should not be treated as authentic quotations from either politician. Contemporary reporting and an archive of Trump’s posts identified the material as AI-generated or AI-manipulated. The available reporting does not establish what software was used, who technically produced the clip, or that Trump personally created it. The verified fact is that Trump posted or shared it on Truth Social.

The video also folded Trump’s political attacks over immigration and healthcare into the fabricated exchange. Because the speech was altered, the claims made by the characters in the clip were part of a political message—not evidence of what Schumer or Jeffries actually said.

Watch the archived first video, keeping in mind that the clip contains offensive imagery and fabricated speech.

Why Jeffries and critics called it racist

Jeffries is Black and represents New York’s 8th Congressional District. The video placed stereotypical imagery associated with Mexicans and Mexican Americans onto his likeness: specifically, a sombrero, a large mustache, and mariachi-style music. Critics said that combination was not neutral political satire but a racialized caricature.

Jeffries described the post as “fake” and “disgusting” during a September 29 appearance on MSNBC, arguing that bigotry would not succeed. On September 30, after Trump shared another manipulated clip using the same sombrero-and-mustache imagery, Jeffries said Trump should address him directly rather than use what he called a “racist and fake AI video.” He later characterized the depiction as a “xenophobic stereotype.”

Latino advocacy groups and other critics also condemned the imagery. Their objection was not that Jeffries was being identified as Mexican or Mexican American—there is no basis for that claim—but that a Black political leader was being represented through a stereotype associated with another ethnic and national-origin group.

That distinction matters. The visual elements are observable and documented. Calling them racist or xenophobic is an interpretation made by Jeffries, allied organizations, journalists, and some political figures. It is also the central criticism of the post, but it remains a contested characterization rather than an independently measurable fact.

How Trump’s allies defended the post

Vice President JD Vance defended the videos on October 1, saying they were jokes or humorous political commentary and rejecting the criticism that they were racist. Trump’s broader defense rested on treating the clips as memes or satire aimed at political opponents.

That defense creates the central argument over the episode: whether viewers should understand the clip primarily as an obviously exaggerated joke or as deceptive synthetic media that uses racial stereotypes to demean real people. A parody can be offensive without being factually authentic, but the use of fabricated voices and realistic political footage makes the boundary less clear than it would be in a plainly labeled cartoon.

There were also indications that discomfort with the post was not limited to Democrats. Speaker Mike Johnson was reported by The Daily Beast to have expressed discomfort about the vulgar AI video in a conversation with Democratic Representative Madeleine Dean. That account should be understood as reported criticism, not as a formal statement issued by Johnson or Republican leadership.

Vance’s defense was reported as a “joke, not racist” argument, while reporting on Jeffries’ response described the imagery as a xenophobic stereotype.

The shutdown fight behind the video

The post appeared during the final hours of a dispute over federal funding. On September 29, Trump met at the White House with Vice President Vance, Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The meeting ended without an agreement to prevent a lapse in federal funding.

The statutory funding deadline was September 30, 2025. Trump posted the first manipulated video only hours after the meeting, turning a private-looking negotiation among senior officials into material for a public social-media attack. The clip referenced the same political disagreements—particularly healthcare, immigration, and Democratic opposition—that were being argued around the funding legislation.

The timing made the video politically significant. It arrived as the president and congressional leaders were attempting, without reaching a compromise, to resolve an immediate legislative crisis. But the available evidence does not establish that the video caused the shutdown, changed negotiations, or altered votes. The supported conclusion is narrower: it became part of the political messaging surrounding the funding dispute.

Trump posted a second related manipulated video on September 30 after Jeffries criticized the first. Jeffries responded that Trump should say such things to his face rather than rely on a synthetic video.

Who is Hakeem Jeffries?

Hakeem S. Jeffries has represented New York’s 8th Congressional District since January 2013, after first being elected in 2012. He is the House Democratic Leader—the top Democrat in the House and the leader of the chamber’s minority party during the period in question.

His position helps explain why he appeared in the video. This was not an attack on an obscure private citizen; it targeted the highest-ranking House Democrat immediately after he had participated in direct funding negotiations with the president and other congressional leaders. Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, also appeared in the manipulated footage.

Jeffries’ official biography is available through his congressional office. The House leadership page also lists the chamber’s leadership structure at House.gov.

How to evaluate an AI-manipulated political video

This episode illustrates why political videos need to be checked before their dialogue or captions are treated as evidence. A few practical questions can help:

  1. Find the original post. Identify who uploaded the clip, when it was posted, and whether the uploader labels it as parody, satire, or AI-generated.
  2. Compare the footage with independent video. News coverage, official livestreams, C-SPAN footage, or an unedited recording may show whether the audio and visuals match the event.
  3. Check the speech against transcripts. If a politician supposedly made an extraordinary statement, look for a contemporaneous transcript or recording from a reliable outlet.
  4. Look for editing clues, but do not rely on them alone. Unnatural mouth movement, inconsistent lighting, abrupt audio changes, or a voice that does not match the speaker can be warning signs. Their absence does not prove that a video is authentic.
  5. Separate the image from the claim. A real photograph or video frame can be combined with fabricated audio or digitally added elements. Authentic source footage does not make every part of a finished clip authentic.
  6. Read coverage from more than one perspective. Reporting can establish what was posted and when, while the meaning of an image may remain politically disputed.

What the episode reveals about political deepfakes

The controversy is not only about whether a political joke was offensive. It is also about how synthetic media changes the meaning of political communication when it is shared by a sitting president.

A clearly labeled parody invites viewers to interpret exaggeration as commentary. A realistic clip that uses recognizable officials, altered voices, and no obvious on-screen warning can be encountered first as apparent evidence. Even viewers who understand that the content is artificial may still have difficulty determining which elements came from a genuine recording and which were added later.

The racial controversy intensified that problem. The clip combined fabricated words with a visual stereotype, making it difficult to separate criticism of policy from mockery of identity. Jeffries and his supporters saw the combination as racist and xenophobic; Vance and Trump’s defenders saw it as political humor. Those interpretations can be reported fairly without treating the fabricated dialogue as real.

The most defensible account therefore keeps three questions separate: what the video contained, whether the content was authentic, and what the imagery communicated. The first two are documented with relative clarity. The third remains contested, although the response from Jeffries, Latino advocacy groups, and others explains why the post was widely condemned as racist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the video of Hakeem Jeffries real?

No. The video used authentic-looking political footage but fabricated or altered speech and digitally added imagery. It was identified in contemporary reporting and archived copies of Trump’s posts as AI-generated or AI-manipulated, not as a genuine recording of Jeffries making the statements attributed to him.

Did Donald Trump create the AI video himself?

The available evidence establishes that Trump posted or shared the video, not that he personally created it. The specific software, producer, and production process were not established in the supplied reporting.

Why was the video described as xenophobic?

Critics objected to the digitally added sombrero, handlebar-style mustache, and mariachi-style music placed on the image of Black House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. They viewed the combination as a stereotype associated with Mexicans and Mexican Americans. Jeffries called it a xenophobic stereotype, while Trump’s defenders called it a joke.

Did the video cause the 2025 government shutdown?

There is no evidence in the supplied reporting that the video caused the shutdown or changed congressional negotiations. It was posted after a White House meeting ended without a funding agreement and became part of the political messaging around the September 30 deadline.

The Bottom Line

Trump shared the AI-manipulated video during an unresolved government-funding crisis, and the clip used fabricated speech and stereotypical imagery to portray Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer. Jeffries and other critics called the imagery racist and xenophobic; JD Vance and Trump’s defenders called it political humor. The episode shows how synthetic media can blur parody, deception, and identity-based stereotyping—especially when the material is shared as political communication by a president.
