Tiptoe, a sulcata tortoise owned by Caitlin Doran, became an online sensation after a video showed him slowly approaching a plate of vegetables, then tucking into lunch at speed. The clip’s appeal was simple: a very large tortoise, an unhurried walk to his food, and an unexpectedly eager meal.
What happened in Tiptoe’s viral lunch video?
The video featured Tiptoe approaching a plate of carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers. He took his time getting there, then ate quickly once he reached the food. The 2021 Daily Paws profile described his meals as “veggie charcuterie boards.”
That description captures the joke: Tiptoe’s slow approach made the moment feel almost ceremonious, while his appetite supplied the punchline. The foods shown in that clip are not a statement of his complete diet.
Who is Tiptoe, and who made the video?
Tiptoe is an African spurred, or sulcata, tortoise. His owner, Caitlin Doran, said her family adopted him when she was seven. In a 2021 profile, Daily Paws reported that Tiptoe was 19 years old and weighed 175 pounds at the time; those are historical figures, not current updates.

Doran began posting videos of Tiptoe in July 2020, after months of unemployment. She told Daily Paws that she had been inspired by creators making meals for their families: “I was like, okay, I do this for Tiptoe all day anyway, so I might as well make a funny little video of it and post it so I can put some smiles on my friends’ faces.”
How popular did the video become?
According to Doran’s account in the Daily Paws feature, the first lunch video passed one million views within an hour. About a year after it was posted, the profile reported more than 12.2 million views and more than two million likes for the video, while Tiptoe’s TikTok account had almost four million followers. These are 2021 figures; they do not establish the video’s current totals or the account’s present status.

Why did Tiptoe’s story resonate?
The clip offered an instantly readable contrast: Tiptoe was enormous, yet his approach to lunch was patient and almost dainty. The moment also came from Doran’s everyday routine rather than an elaborate stunt. She said Tiptoe had been by her side since she got him, and told Daily Paws, “He just makes me a better person and helps me recognize what’s truly important in life.” Those are Doran’s reflections from the 2021 interview, and they give the viral clip a personal dimension beyond the food gag.

A short entertainment clip is not a feeding guide. The carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers visible in Tiptoe’s lunch video do not establish what he eats regularly or whether that meal is appropriate as a complete diet.

For broader care context, Mazuri says its Low Starch Tortoise Diet is suitable for African spurred/sulcata tortoises and advises providing forage and fresh water daily (Mazuri product information). Zoo Med describes its Grassland Tortoise Food as a maintenance diet for sulcatas and recommends high-fiber, low-protein feeding with appropriate grasses and leafy plants (Zoo Med’s sulcata care and product information). Neither manufacturer source says Tiptoe eats either product, and a viral meal should not be used to infer his individual feeding regimen.
