Yes. Barking close to your dog to provoke a reaction can startle or confuse them, and a dramatic response in a video is not proof that the dog is enjoying the interaction. Veterinary behavior experts advise skipping the challenge and choosing activities your dog can join willingly and leave freely.
What was the bark-at-your-dog TikTok trend?
In the trend described by Daily Paws on December 7, 2021, an owner sat close to a dog, barked at them—or played a TikTok audio of barking—and filmed the response. The article reported that videos had received more than 300 million views over the preceding month at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current view count.
Can barking at my dog scare or confuse them?
It can. A bark delivered at close range, especially alongside leaning over or staring, may put pressure on a dog that does not understand what is happening. Dogs respond differently: one may seem playful or unconcerned, while another may be frightened, uncomfortable, or defensive. A viral clip alone cannot establish what the dog is feeling.
Jenna Stregowski, RVT, Daily Paws’ pet health and behavior editor, recommends not participating. She warns, “If done repeatedly, it can even condition the dog to fear or avoid you.” This is her expert advice, not a quantified finding about how often lasting effects occur. Her conclusion is: “The risk of barking at your dog outweighs any potential benefits.”

How can I tell if my dog is uncomfortable?
Look at the dog’s whole body and the situation, rather than treating one gesture as a diagnosis. Possible signs of stress or discomfort include:
- Backing away or trying to escape
- Flattened or pinned ears, wide eyes, or “whale eye” (showing the whites of the eyes)
- A stiff body or lip licking
- Growling or baring teeth
These cues need context; no single sign proves what a dog is feeling. The American Kennel Club also cautions that a frightened dog may lunge, snap, or bite—even if the dog is not usually aggressive. Give the dog space rather than pushing for another reaction.

What should I do instead?
Choose an activity that lets your dog opt in and move away. Daily Paws suggests ordinary play such as fetch or belly rubs, if your dog enjoys them. Humane World for Animals recommends voluntary activities and paying attention to body language that indicates enjoyment. Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Valli Parthasarathy puts the principle this way: “There are some trends I think are great—ones where animals are doing something voluntarily and their body language indicates they’re enjoying it.”
If you want to make a video, Humane World for Animals suggests adding a viral audio track to footage of your pet naturally going about their day, instead of staging a startling interaction. Its guidance also notes signs such as lip licking, stress yawning, whale eye, and panting as possible signs of stress. For a practical choice between ideas, ask whether the dog can freely leave, whether their body looks relaxed, and whether the idea relies on getting close, staring, or startling them. These are useful welfare checks, not a formal scoring test.
