The Walking Dead: Dead City honored Frank Hildebrand in its Season 2, Episode 2 dedication card because he was a longtime production colleague in AMC’s wider Walking Dead universe. He produced and managed production on Fear the Walking Dead, and also appeared briefly in that series. The sources confirm the tribute and his franchise ties, but do not explain why this particular Dead City episode was selected.
Which episode carried the dedication?
The card appeared with “Another Shitty Lesson,” Season 2, Episode 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. AMC lists the episode’s original air date as May 11, 2025. Its synopsis says Maggie begins a dangerous journey back to the island while Negan reluctantly joins the fight. AMC’s episode listing identifies the episode and its air date.
Who was Frank Hildebrand?
Hildebrand worked behind the camera as a producer and unit production manager on Fear the Walking Dead from Seasons 2 through 8, spanning 2016 to 2023, according to ComicBook’s report. He also had a small on-screen role in the final season, playing Hildy, a stranded German tourist. He was therefore both a production crew member and, briefly, a performer in the franchise.
ComicBook reported that Hildebrand died on November 21, 2024, at age 73, after a brief illness.

What did the tribute say?
The card before the credits read: “With respect and love to Frank Hildebrand, 1950-2024. From AMC and The Walking Dead Universe.” Its wording attributes the tribute to AMC and the broader franchise, rather than to the episode’s characters or story.
Scott M. Gimple, identified by ComicBook as a Fear the Walking Dead executive producer and the chief content officer overseeing AMC’s Walking Dead universe, also remembered Hildebrand publicly in November 2024. Gimple wrote: “We lost a great 1: FTWD’s Frank Hildebrand. A maestro of mitigating madness & creating calm in the storm of 16 eps/yr, he knew how to work & how to play, all with class. He’s 1 of those people who sticks w/you: a notable character of character. We were lucky to know & work w/him.” The reference to “16 eps/yr” is Gimple’s description of the production workload, not a separate series statistic established here.

Why was this particular episode chosen?
The available reporting and AMC listing establish that the episode carried the dedication and that Hildebrand had substantial ties to Fear the Walking Dead and the larger franchise. They do not quote AMC or the Dead City producers explaining why “Another Shitty Lesson” was the episode selected. A specific personal connection to the episode, its plot, or a direct role for Hildebrand on Dead City is not established by these sources.
