The Rock said he chose to step back after the Elimination Chamber angle so the WrestleMania 41 story could focus on John Cena and Cody Rhodes. In his account of a Pat McAfee Show interview, he said Cena was chasing a record seventeenth world title and that the story about Rhodes’s “soul” could wait. He said he personally called both men and told them The Final Boss’s work was done for the time being.
Why The Rock said he stepped back
The Rock’s explanation was about where the spotlight should fall. He said the final stretch to WrestleMania belonged to Cena and Rhodes—not to a continuing story about The Rock’s influence over Rhodes or Cena’s “soul.” Cena was pursuing his seventeenth world title, and The Rock believed the two wrestlers should carry the build themselves.
As quoted in Sports Illustrated/FanNation Wrestling’s April 22, 2025 report on the interview, The Rock said: “Step back and let The Final Boss step back into the shadows. Let all that spotlight go on John. Let it go to Cody. Let’s not make it about Cody’s soul or John’s soul. Let’s let them do what they do.” He also said: “I called John and spoke to him. I called Cody and I said, I think The Final Boss’s work is done.” Sports Illustrated/FanNation Wrestling
That makes his stated reason for being involved—and then stepping away—two parts of the same creative choice: he helped set up the conflict, then decided the WrestleMania story should no longer revolve around him. He said the Cody soul storyline could be revisited later.

How The Rock became part of the feud
The on-screen angle took shape at Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025. Cena won the men’s Chamber match to earn a WrestleMania title opportunity. Rhodes rejected The Rock’s offer to become his champion, and Cena attacked Rhodes afterward. WWE’s recap described Cena as seemingly aligning with The Rock, creating the turn that set up the title match. WWE’s Elimination Chamber recap
The Rock later described how the angle was developed. In PWTorch’s April 23, 2025 account of the Pat McAfee Show interview, he said Ari Emanuel called roughly a month before Elimination Chamber to ask whether The Final Boss would appear. The Rock said he came up with the Cody “soul” storyline and had pitched the possibility of Rhodes turning heel. He said Triple H later suggested turning Cena instead, and that he agreed. “I got a call about a month before Elimination Chamber,” he said. PWTorch’s report

What his explanation does—and does not—establish
The available account supports a clear answer to why The Rock was involved: he said he devised the soul premise, agreed to Cena’s heel turn, and then chose to step back so the main-event build could center on Cena and Rhodes. His stated decision explains his absence from the match’s finish; it does not establish every backstage consideration behind the creative direction.
