“Not new this week” is a phrase that fits the Thanksgiving week of November 24 to 28, 2025, when CBS aired reruns of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. It does not describe the show today. The series ended with its final broadcast on May 21, 2026, so there are no new episodes to wait for.
What the “this week” phrase refers to
The phrase traces to a TV Insider article published November 25, 2025, which explained why new episodes were not airing that week. CBS scheduled repeats because Thanksgiving fell on Thursday, November 27, 2025. It was a seasonal break in the regular schedule, and it had no connection to the show’s long-term future.
TV Insider’s report listed the repeats that ran that week. The episodes below are the ones reported at the time. Local affiliates could schedule differently, so treat this as the network’s published lineup rather than a guarantee for every station.
| Day (week of Nov. 24, 2025) | Episode originally aired | Guests |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Nov. 24 | November 12 | Jonathan Karl and Pete Townshend |
| Tuesday, Nov. 25 | November 10 | Demi Moore and Ken Burns |
| Wednesday, Nov. 26 | October 22 | Emma Stone and Alex Wagner |
| Thursday, Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving) | November 3 | Tom Hanks and Mavis Staples |
| Friday, Nov. 28 | November 5 | Tiffany Haddish and Gary Cole |
Why there are no new episodes now
The show is no longer in production. CBS News reported that the final episode aired on May 21, 2026. Earlier, the network had announced it would end the program and retire the Late Show franchise at the close of the 2025–26 season. Any search for a current “break” or “hiatus” is out of date, because there is no scheduled return.

The finale
CBS News described the finale as including Paul McCartney as the final guest and a performance of “Hello, Goodbye.” The Associated Press independently confirmed the final broadcast date and described the finale as closing the franchise’s 33-year run. Across that run, The Associated Press reported that more than 1,800 episodes were made, and CBS News noted that Colbert hosted for 11 years.
During the finale, Colbert told Jon Stewart: “I didn’t think my show would end like this, but still grateful.”

CBS’s stated reason
CBS said ending the franchise was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” That is the only reason the network has given on the record, as reported by CBS News.
Speculation about timing
Some viewers and commentators questioned the timing of the cancellation and suggested political motives. Those views are speculation by individuals, not findings from CBS or any reporting that establishes a political cause. Readers should treat the financial explanation as the company’s stated reason and the political theories as unproven.

During its run, Paramount’s press releases said the show aired Monday through Friday from 11:35 p.m. to 12:37 a.m. ET/PT on CBS and was available on Paramount+, both live and on demand, under plan-dependent terms. Those statements describe the show during its run. They do not confirm what is in the current Paramount+ catalogue or whether a given account can stream older episodes.
