Akihiko Kayaba appears to have created Aincrad to make real a childhood vision of a floating castle; the story’s death-game rules show the cost of turning that dream into reality. His motive offers context, not justification.
Why did Kayaba create Sword Art Online?
The strongest explanation comes from the light novel: Kayaba had imagined a castle floating in the sky since childhood and longed to reach the world beyond ordinary reality. Aincrad gave him a way to make that imagined place real. This motive is described in a translation mirror of Volume 10, rather than an official publisher-hosted excerpt, so it is best treated as light-novel context.

The official anime synopsis establishes the consequence of that project: Kayaba, identified as SAO’s developer, makes the game inescapable until its levels are cleared, and says that game over means death in reality. The childhood dream explains his desire; it does not excuse the imprisonment or the lethal stakes.
Who is Akihiko Kayaba?
Kayaba is the developer of Sword Art Online and the figure who announces its death-game conditions. He is also later known in the story as Heathcliff, leader of the Knights of the Blood Oath.

How did Kayaba trap the players?
The official synopsis says NerveGear enables full dives into the virtual world, then describes Kayaba’s announcement that players cannot leave until they clear all levels. It does not establish a complete technical account of how the device enforces the trap, so the grounded answer is about the rules he imposes rather than additional hardware mechanics.
What are the death-game rules?
- Players cannot escape until all levels are cleared.
- Game over is equivalent to death in the real world.
These are the core stakes stated in the official Aincrad synopsis.
What was Kayaba’s floating-castle dream?
The light-novel passage links Kayaba’s childhood vision of a castle in the sky with his longing to reach a world beyond ordinary reality. It supplies a personal fantasy behind Aincrad, but it does not amount to a complete account of every reason he acted as he did.
Did Kayaba create NerveGear as well as SAO?
The official synopsis identifies Kayaba as SAO’s developer and NerveGear as the device used for full dives. Those facts do not establish that he alone invented every component of NerveGear, so attributing the device’s complete technical authorship to him goes beyond what is established here.

What did Kayaba mean when he said he forgot his original reason?
The precise meaning remains ambiguous in the available authoritative material. The childhood floating-castle dream is one stated piece of context, but it does not settle exactly what Kayaba means by forgetting his original reason. Fan interpretations should not be presented as a definitive canon answer.
Why does Kayaba appear as Heathcliff?
The official episode synopsis identifies Heathcliff as leader of the Knights of the Blood Oath and describes his duel and unique skill. It does not explain Kayaba’s full reasoning for adopting that identity, so the motive for the persona remains open.

Which book should you read to learn more about Aincrad?
For the original prose story, start with Sword Art Online 1: Aincrad, the light novel listed by Yen Press in paperback (ISBN 9780316371247). Yen Press also lists Sword Art Online Re:Aincrad, Vol. 1, a manga retelling rather than the original novel.
