The Hardy Boyz came back to WWE’s NXT brand on February 25, 2025, when WWE booked Matt and Jeff Hardy to face the No Quarter Catch Crew. The official announcement framed it as the brothers’ first return to a WWE ring together since 2021, and the Hardys were billed as TNA Tag Team Champions after the NXT team called them out. This was a booked appearance and a match story, not an announced full-time move back to the WWE roster.
Which return this article covers
The title does not give a date, and the Hardys have had several WWE comebacks over the years. This article covers the 2025 NXT appearance and the championship storyline that followed later that year. Earlier returns, including Jeff Hardy’s 2006 and 2017 comebacks, are covered in a separate section so they are not confused with the 2025 booking.
What WWE announced in February 2025
WWE’s NXT article for February 25, 2025 set out the core facts of the booking:
- The date and brand: The appearance was on NXT, dated February 25, 2025.
- The status claimed: WWE billed Matt and Jeff as current TNA Tag Team Champions, meaning they were champions from a partner promotion rather than WWE champions.
- The trigger: Myles Borne and Tavion Heights of the No Quarter Catch Crew called the Hardys out.
- The milestone: WWE described it as the brothers’ first return to a WWE ring together since 2021.
The announced story was therefore a match against a younger NXT team that wanted to make a statement, set against the brothers’ long history in WWE. WWE’s announcement does not explain whether the Hardys were signed to any further WWE dates.

Why the booking made sense for WWE
WWE did not publish a full statement of its creative or commercial reasons, so the explanation below is an interpretation of the announced booking, not a confirmed internal rationale.
Three elements stand out in WWE’s own framing. First, the Hardys bring recognition: WWE’s official Jeff Hardy biography says the brothers “revolutionized sports-entertainment by taking the Ladder Match to new heights and pioneering the Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match.” That is WWE’s characterization of their influence, not an independent ranking, but it explains why a booking built on their names carries weight. Second, the opponent is a rising team, which gives the match a clear narrative: established veterans against a team proving itself. Third, the Hardys arrived as champions from TNA, so the appearance also served as a visible point of contact between two promotions.

The Winner Take All follow-up later in 2025
The February appearance was not the end of the storyline. The timeline below separates the dated WWE material available for this article:
| Date | WWE material | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| February 25, 2025 | NXT announcement | The Hardys returned to NXT as TNA Tag Team Champions after the No Quarter Catch Crew called them out. |
| September 30, 2025 | NXT highlight | The Hardys were described as current TNA World Tag Team Champions responding to DarkState’s challenge for a Winner Take All match. |
| October 25, 2025 | Halloween Havoc event page | WWE said the Hardys defeated DarkState to become double champions, with a rematch set for the NXT Tag Team Championship. |
The distinction matters. The February 2025 appearance was a single NXT booking with a stated opponent. The later storyline built on it with championship stakes from both promotions, and the Halloween Havoc page is the most recent dated WWE material this article relies on. Developments after October 2025 are outside its coverage.

What the brothers said about returning
WWE’s 2006 archival feature, “Bound by blood and fate,” records Matt Hardy saying, “WWE is his home, and he was put on this earth to wrestle.” In the same interview, Jeff said, “What I’ve missed most are the massive crowds that you perform in front of.”
Both remarks come from 2006 and describe an earlier reunion. They do not explain the 2025 NXT booking, and they should not be read as the brothers’ reasons for the 2025 appearance.
