Steve McManaman is not demonstrably “the worst co-commentator of them all”: the sources available offer no representative poll or consistent comparison across commentators. But there is a substantial craft-based case for why some viewers find his work frustrating. Journalist Bruce Millington argues that McManaman too often describes what viewers can already see instead of explaining why a moment happened. That is a defensible criticism to examine, not a measured verdict on every commentator.
What makes the criticism more than a complaint about taste?
The strongest case against McManaman concerns what a co-commentator adds to a match. A viewer can see a pass, a foul or a substitution. The useful contribution is to explain the decision behind it: what a team is trying to change, why a player made that choice, or how the move affects the shape of the game.
In a published opinion piece, Racing Post writer Bruce Millington argues that this explanatory role is the prime purpose of co-commentary. His verdict is pointed: “You are failing to fulfil the prime purpose of a co-commentator, which is to tell us not what happened but why it happened.” That is Millington’s standard and assessment, not an official broadcasting rule or an independent performance audit. Read Millington’s critique.
Insight and tactical explanation
Millington’s complaint is that McManaman could provide more tactical context. A co-commentator can explain how a press is being beaten, why a team is protecting a lead in a particular way, or what a substitution might do to the formation. Millington points to discussion of Paris Saint-Germain’s defensive shape as an example where he felt the analysis did not go far enough.

Information viewers cannot get from the picture
A substitution is a natural moment to add detail: what sort of player is coming on, what role they may take, and what that might mean for the players around them. Millington argues that McManaman could do more research and explain those possibilities rather than leave the change largely self-explanatory. The criticism is not that every prediction must prove right; it is that informed context makes the broadcast more useful.
Accuracy and willingness to revise
Live judgments are often made quickly, but a replay can change the picture. Millington cites an initial assessment of a Neymar foul in a Champions League final as an instance where he felt McManaman did not sufficiently reconsider his first reaction after further evidence and discussion. That is a specific critic’s reading of a broadcast moment, not proof of a wider pattern on its own.

What the 2023 Champions League final shows—and does not show
In a retrospective on BT Sport’s coverage of the 10 June 2023 Champions League final, Michael Lee of Planet Football sharply criticized McManaman’s contribution, describing it as short on insight, wisdom and a sense of occasion. The final is a concrete example of the kind of high-profile broadcast that can shape a viewer’s impression, but one match cannot settle an all-time ranking.
The same retrospective supplied a qualification: “McManaman has many critics, but we thought we saw improvement in his co-comms over the past few years.” That note matters. It makes the assessment event-specific and allows for change rather than treating every performance as identical. Read the Planet Football retrospective.

Why do fans complain about him?
In one Reddit discussion, the question was, “How is Steve McManaman still commentating with TNT Sports?” Posters described him as among the worst, alleged bias during Real Madrid matches, and complained about his voice or how much he speaks. Those comments capture the language and concerns of some viewers; they are anecdotal posts, not evidence that most audiences agree or that the bias allegation is established. See the Reddit discussion.
The complaints also point to distinct standards that should not be collapsed into one verdict. Perceived club bias concerns balance; talkativeness concerns economy; complaints about voice concern communication style. A fair evaluation would consider each separately alongside tactical explanation, useful information beyond what is visible, accuracy, and consistency.

Criticize the commentary, not the person
Football365 writer Sarah Winterburn observed in a 1 February 2021 column that co-commentators often become targets during live matches, naming McManaman and Karen Carney among those drawing criticism at the time. She warned that online attacks can become personal: “They can get very personal, nasty and even aggressive.” Her argument is a useful boundary for this debate: a broadcast can be criticized for its craft without turning that criticism into abuse of the broadcaster. Read Winterburn’s column.
Winterburn also makes the case that commentary contributes emotion and context to televised football. The question is not whether a co-commentator should add anything at all, but whether the contribution helps viewers understand or feel the match. That distinction leaves room for strong criticism without pretending that a commentator’s voice or personality is an objective defect.

Is McManaman really the worst co-commentator?
No available evidence establishes that ranking. The sources discussed here contain a named journalist’s detailed critique, an event-specific retrospective, examples of fan reactions, and a warning against personal attacks. They do not provide a representative audience poll, a scoring method, or a consistent comparison with every other co-commentator. Reddit comments cannot fill that gap.
So the title’s superlative works as polemical opinion, not a fact. The more supportable argument is narrower: viewers who expect tactical explanation, researched context and a willingness to revisit a quick judgment have clear grounds, in Millington’s account, to find McManaman frustrating. Whether that makes him worse than every peer remains a matter of judgment rather than demonstrated rank.
What his TNT Sports profile establishes
TNT Sports’ profile page includes McManaman in its football coverage and displayed material dated through 9 September 2026 when accessed. Those entries establish an ongoing association with the broadcaster, not a match rota or proof of which games he commentated on. The broadcaster’s 2024/25-season Q&A says he made over 500 appearances across Liverpool and Real Madrid. That playing background gives context to his football career; it does not prove or disprove the quality of his commentary. View the TNT Sports profile; read the 2024/25 Q&A.
