Why Stephen Colbert Had an Edge Over Late-Night Competition

One reported advantage was simple but valuable: The Late Show could update its monologue with jokes about breaking news after taping had begun. Former Tonight Show writer Jon Rineman recalled that Stephen Colbert would return to his monologue mark to record three or four new jokes, which were then edited into the segment. That gave the show a way to respond later in the news cycle—not proof that the tactic alone drove ratings.

How Colbert’s monologue could catch up with breaking news

In an August 2026 account published by LateNighter, Jon Rineman, a former writer for a competing late-night show, described a workflow that let The Late Show refresh its monologue during a taping. If a major story broke, Colbert could record several jokes about it at his monologue mark, and the production team could edit that material into the segment.

“I found out that Stephen, when there was breaking news during taping, would actually go [back] over to his monologue mark and film three or four jokes about that breaking story. And then they would edit it into the monologue.”

The practical edge was timeliness: viewers could see a response to a story that emerged after the original monologue had been prepared. It was an editing and production choice, not a different distribution platform or a guarantee that every late update would become a hit.

Why that flexibility mattered politically

LateNighter’s interviews describe the 2016 election as a turning point for political monologues and audience interest in Colbert’s response to the new president. In that climate, being able to address fast-moving political news could help a show feel current and give its host a distinct point of view.

That context matters, but it does not establish a single cause for Colbert’s competitiveness. Political interest, the substance and delivery of the jokes, scheduling, and audience habits all shape a late-night show’s reach. The available ratings figures describe audiences; they do not measure how much the late-editing tactic contributed.

What the ratings show—and what they do not

The strongest recent snapshot in LateNighter’s reporting is from the second quarter of 2026. Nielsen Live+7 figures reported by the outlet put The Late Show at an average of 3.49 million viewers across 25 first-run episodes, 29% above its first-quarter average. Its May 21 finale drew 9.77 million viewers in Live+7.

Those figures describe a particular period, not an ordinary week: the quarter included the show’s farewell, and the finale’s audience was far above the program’s quarter average. They should not be treated as evidence that Colbert routinely drew nearly 10 million viewers or that the monologue workflow caused the increase.

Colbert did not lead every comparison

Rankings depend on the time period, audience measure, and shows included. In LateNighter’s reported 2025–26 season comparison, The Late Show averaged 2.88 million Live+7 viewers, behind Gutfeld! at 3.01 million among the programs tracked. Jimmy Kimmel Live averaged 2.52 million. The same report said Kimmel led the adults 18–49 field, illustrating that a ranking by total viewers need not match a ranking by a younger demographic.

2025–26 season, total viewers The Late Show: 2.88 million; Gutfeld!: 3.01 million; Jimmy Kimmel Live: 2.52 million Nielsen Live+7 season averages reported by LateNighter for the shows tracked. The report notes Colbert’s partial season affects the comparison.
Adults 18–49, 2025–26 season Kimmel led the field A different measure from total audience; the report does not give a comparable figure here.

Airtime also matters when comparing programs: Gutfeld! airs earlier, and shows can reach different household audiences. A defensible comparison should name the period, Live+7 or other viewing window, total viewers or demographic, and whether the count covers first-run episodes, a partial season, or a special broadcast.

Nor was Colbert always ahead of his closest competitors. ABC’s official ratings release for the week of October 7, 2024 said Jimmy Kimmel Live beat The Late Show in that head-to-head comparison. Individual weeks and broader seasonal rankings can tell different stories.

What the cancellation does—and does not—say about performance

When CBS announced the cancellation, the network said the decision was purely financial and was not related to the show’s performance or content, as reported by Axios in July 2025. That is CBS’s stated explanation; it is not independent proof of the decision’s full rationale. The cancellation itself should not be used to claim that Colbert had lost every ratings comparison, just as a strong finale does not establish that the show led the field throughout its run.
