Why Starling Murmurations Captivate: Zachary Slavin on Flock Motion

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starling murmurations captivate because thousands of birds can form a moving shape that appears choreographed without a visible leader. Zachary Slavin’s explanation, quoted by Audubon, is local rather than top-down: each starling watches nearby birds, keeps its distance and reacts, allowing the flock to travel and change direction together. Slavin says that unpredictability may also make it difficult for a falcon or hawk to track one bird.

What a starling murmuration is

A murmuration is the large flocking display made by European starlings as they gather at communal roosts. Audubon’s January 22, 2016 article describes fall and winter roosts that can swell into the tens of thousands. At dusk or around a roost, the birds may stream, compress, turn and spread until the flock resembles a single living form.

The word describes the display, not a separate species or a special stage of the starling’s life. The birds remain individual animals, but their spacing and rapid responses produce patterns that a distant observer experiences as one coordinated object. The flock can look as though it has been given a command, even when no leader is directing it.

Why the scene looks choreographed

A large flock contains many moving bodies, yet the gaps between birds often remain visually coherent. A turn that begins at one edge can appear to travel across the group. The eye reads the resulting curve or wave as a deliberate design because the change is both collective and fast. What appears to be a single decision is better understood, in Slavin’s account, as many nearby interactions happening at once.

Scale contributes to the effect. A few birds changing direction is easy to follow as separate behavior. Tens of thousands at a roost create depth, density and shifting outlines that conceal the exact moment when any one bird responds. The viewer sees the flock’s shape and motion more readily than the individual decisions that generate them.

How the flock moves without a leader

Slavin’s neighbor-based explanation

Audubon identifies Zachary Slavin as its Citizen Science Program Manager and says he spoke to Voices of America. Explaining starling coordination, Slavin compared the process with a school of fish:

“…like a school of fish, there is not a leader of the flock,” he said, “but rather each individual bird is watching the birds nearest to it, keeping a set distance from them, and so they are all traveling together and reacting together.”

Three parts of that description matter. First, there is no single bird issuing instructions. Second, each bird monitors the birds nearest to it rather than attempting to oversee the whole flock. Third, maintaining a set distance supplies a spacing rule. When a neighbor shifts, the observing bird adjusts; its neighbors can then adjust in turn.

From local reactions to a flock-wide turn

This account explains why a reaction can look larger than the event that started it. A bird responds to a nearby change, and birds around it respond to their own neighbors. The resulting adjustments can move through the flock as a visible change in direction or density. No individual needs a map of the entire group for the group to produce a unified pattern.

The explanation also distinguishes synchronization from hierarchy. Synchronized motion does not prove that one starling is a commander, that the oldest bird leads, or that the flock follows a fixed route. Slavin’s statement supports a model of nearby birds responding to one another. It does not, by itself, measure reaction times, specify the exact distance each bird maintains, or establish that every murmuration follows identical rules.

What this account does—and does not—establish

The Audubon article presents an interview explanation, not a primary experiment on flock coordination. It is therefore safest to describe the neighbor-response mechanism as Slavin’s account of how the display works. It offers an intuitive way to understand the spectacle while leaving detailed biological questions open, including how many neighbors a bird attends to, how spacing changes in different conditions and how the pattern varies among roosts.

Why a murmuration may help against predators

The tracking problem for a falcon or hawk

Slavin connects the flock’s unpredictable motion with a possible defense against aerial predators. His explanation, as quoted by Audubon, is:

“When they’re under attack from a predator like a falcon or a hawk, flying in these huge flocks with a really unpredictable motion and lots of individual birds makes it really hard for a predator to track individuals and catch individual birds,”

The proposed advantage is not that a predator cannot enter the flock or that every bird is protected. It is that selecting and following one target becomes more difficult when many birds move close together and the group changes shape unpredictably. A hunting bird must maintain a visual lock on an individual while the surrounding birds are also turning and crossing its field of view.

Why the explanation should be qualified

Audubon attributes this anti-predator explanation to Slavin; the article is not presented as a controlled test of capture rates. The evidence supplied here therefore supports a plausible functional interpretation, not a measured guarantee that murmurations prevent attacks. A careful description says the display may reduce a predator’s ability to track an individual, while acknowledging that attacks, outcomes and predator tactics are not quantified in the article.

The same movement that fascinates a person on the ground can be difficult to parse from the air. Yet the visual drama should not be mistaken for proof that the flock is optimizing one perfect defensive maneuver. Slavin’s point concerns the practical difficulty of tracking individuals amid collective motion, not an assertion that every turn is deliberately chosen for defense.

Why people find the display so compelling

Individual birds disappear into a changing form

Human attention usually follows separate objects. A murmuration frustrates that habit: the viewer can see thousands of birds, but the flock’s outline keeps changing faster than individual identities can be retained. The result combines order and uncertainty. The group remains connected enough to read as a coherent form, while its next movement is hard to predict.

Scale makes small rules visible

Slavin’s local-interaction description turns an apparently mysterious performance into an emergent one. Each bird follows a limited rule—watch nearby birds and maintain distance—yet a vast number of such interactions produces arcs, pulses and reversals visible across the whole flock. The display is captivating partly because the simple behavior of one bird is transformed by the presence of many others.

The spectacle is seasonal and place-dependent

Audubon places the gatherings in fall and winter and associates them with roosts. That context matters: a murmuration is not an always-present shape in the sky, but a gathering that observers may encounter around particular roosting events. The article does not provide a universal schedule, a guaranteed viewing site or a method for predicting the size of a given flock, so those details should not be inferred from its description.

European starlings in North America: the historical frame

The 1890 Central Park release

Audubon’s 2016 article says that 60 European starlings were released in New York’s Central Park in 1890. It mentions a story connecting the release with a desire to introduce birds named in Shakespeare’s works, but treats that motive as rumor rather than established history. The number and date are historical details reported by that article, not evidence that the release story explains every later population change.

The article’s population figure is not a current count

The same article reports more than 150 million European starlings across North America. It does not identify an underlying study, an estimate year or a primary publisher for that number. Because the article was published on January 22, 2016, the figure should be presented as a number reported at that time—not as a current North American population estimate.

Figure or claim How to state it accurately Qualification
60 birds Audubon’s 2016 article says 60 starlings were released in Central Park in 1890. The article describes the Shakespeare connection as rumor.
More than 150 million The 2016 article reports more than 150 million European starlings across North America. No estimate year or underlying source is supplied, so it is not a current count.
Tens of thousands Audubon says fall and winter roosts can swell into the tens of thousands. The article gives no measurement method or study citation for that description.

Beauty and ecological cost can coexist

Why “captivating” is not the same as “beneficial”

The flocking display has aesthetic power, but that does not make the species ecologically beneficial in every region. Audubon describes European starlings as non-native in North America and says they raid crops, compete with native species and have generated management costs. Those are claims made by the 2016 article; it does not provide supporting citations for each one.

Keeping both ideas in view avoids two opposite errors. Calling starlings invasive does not erase the visual wonder of a murmuration. Admiring the movement does not establish that introducing or protecting the species benefits native ecosystems. The spectacle and the ecological assessment answer different questions.

Use careful language about management

Nothing in the article supplies a management program, cost comparison or recommendation for controlling roosts. It is therefore inappropriate to turn the murmuration explanation into advice about removal, deterrence or conservation policy. The supported point is narrower: the birds’ flocking can be beautiful to watch even as their non-native status and reported impacts create conflicts in North America.

How to read Slavin’s explanation responsibly

The following distinctions keep the article’s strongest observations separate from details it does not establish:

  • Directly attributed: Slavin says nearby-bird attention and distance-keeping produce collective travel and reaction, and he says unpredictable flock motion can complicate a predator’s attempt to track an individual.
  • Descriptive context: Audubon says fall and winter roosts can reach tens of thousands and reports the 1890 release and the population figure above.
  • Not established here: exact coordination algorithms, measured predator success rates, a current population estimate, a universal roost calendar or a definitive explanation for every murmuration’s shape.
  • Historical uncertainty: the Shakespeare-related reason for the Central Park release is presented as rumor.

This separation is important because an engaging interview can make a mechanism sound more settled than the evidence in that particular article allows. Slavin’s account is useful for understanding what viewers see, while detailed claims about flock dynamics or predator performance would require direct behavioral studies beyond the material presented by Audubon.

What to notice when watching a murmuration

  1. Start with the whole outline. Watch how the flock expands, contracts or bends before trying to follow an individual bird.
  2. Look for traveling changes. A turn or darkening that seems to pass across the group illustrates how local adjustments can create a flock-wide pattern.
  3. Separate appearance from mechanism. The flock may look centrally controlled, but Slavin’s explanation points to birds responding to nearby birds.
  4. Keep the predator hypothesis in proportion. Unpredictable motion may make individual tracking harder; it is not evidence that attacks are impossible or that every movement is a conscious defensive plan.
  5. Remember the setting. The display described by Audubon is associated with fall and winter roosts, and the article does not promise that every roost will produce the same size or form.

The central insight

A starling murmuration captivates because it turns countless independent responses into a coordinated visual event. In Slavin’s account, there is no conductor hidden inside the flock: each bird monitors nearby birds, preserves spacing and reacts. At large scale, those simple local adjustments create movement that looks intentional, protects the identity of individual birds within the mass and may complicate a predator’s tracking task. The explanation makes the spectacle less mysterious without making it less remarkable.
