But the account behind the “deeply uncomfortable” framing needs a distinction: director Nick Cassavetes later described a serious on-set clash between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, while Gosling himself spoke separately about feeling uneasy with the movie-star image the film created. He did not describe the entire shoot as deeply uncomfortable.
What happened between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams on set?
In a 2014 account, the Los Angeles Times reported director Nick Cassavetes’s recollection of a difficult day during filming. Cassavetes said Gosling asked him to bring in another actress to read opposite him off camera because he was “not getting anything” from McAdams.
Cassavetes said the two actors were brought into a room with a producer, where they argued. They then returned to work. In the director’s telling, the remainder of filming was not smooth throughout, but it became smoother. This is Cassavetes’s retrospective account of the production, relayed by the Times—not a direct statement from Gosling that the whole film was an uncomfortable experience.
Was Gosling uncomfortable with the movie-star image?
That is a separate part of the story. A 2013 Hindustan Times profile said The Notebook brought Gosling a new level of fame and helped make him a heartthrob. Speaking about the effect of appearing in a film like it, Gosling said, “By virtue of being in a movie like that, it just changes people’s perception of you. But it doesn’t make it true.”

His point was about the public image attached to a role, not a claim that he disliked making the film. The on-set argument and his skepticism about being seen as a movie star are related to the headline’s framing, but they are not the same explanation.
What did Gosling say about McAdams and the romance?
Gosling offered a more nuanced view of his co-star in a 2006 W Magazine profile. He said, “We were together long before we were physically together,” describing their closeness before they began dating after filming. He also called McAdams “a force to be reckoned with.”

In a 2004 cast-and-filmmaker interview, Gosling described the story’s romance as fairy-tale-like and said he tried to find something real in a story unlike his own experience. That was his perspective on the characters and story; it does not establish that he was uncomfortable during production.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does the story keep getting framed as discomfort?
The accounts are easy to conflate: a director’s recollection of a real conflict during filming, followed by a film that shaped Gosling’s public image. The evidence supports saying the co-stars clashed on at least one occasion and that Gosling later questioned the truth of the heartthrob persona. It does not support treating “deeply uncomfortable” as Gosling’s own description of the entire shoot.
