On June 6, 2024, Prince William represented the royal family at the international ceremony at Omaha Beach for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. King Charles III and Queen Camilla were not absent from the commemorations: they attended a separate British-hosted event at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer.
Why did Prince William stand in for King Charles?
It was a division of the royal party’s engagements, not an absence by the King from D-Day events. The Royal Household said Charles and Camilla would attend the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion commemoration at Ver-sur-Mer, while William would attend the international ceremony at Omaha Beach alongside veterans and more than 25 heads of state. The Associated Press also reported that William was taking the King’s place at that international ceremony.

The ceremonies were separate parts of the anniversary program, with different venues and national or international framing.
Which ceremonies did the royals attend?
| Commemoration | Location and framing | Royal attendance |
|---|---|---|
| British-hosted event | British Normandy Memorial, Ver-sur-Mer; organized by the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion | King Charles III and Queen Camilla |
| Canadian ceremony | Juno Beach Centre | Prince William spoke and laid a wreath |
| International ceremony | Omaha Beach | Prince William attended with veterans and more than 25 heads of state |
The Royal Household’s account records William’s appearance at Juno Beach before the international ceremony. The ceremonies at Juno Beach, Ver-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach were distinct events, not different names for one gathering.

What did King Charles say at Ver-sur-Mer?
Charles’s speech at the British Normandy Memorial remembered the Allied landings and honored French civilians who died during the battle. He said: “This memorial stands also as a special homage to the greatest tragedy of D-Day: the unimaginable numbers of French civilians who died in this joint battle, for freedom, as the Allies sealed off North-West France to ensure a final victory.”
Why is June 6 significant?
D-Day was June 6, 1944, when Allied forces began the Normandy landings. In a June 3, 2024 fact report, the Associated Press said nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy that day. AP’s breakdown included 73,000 U.S. troops and 83,000 British and Canadian troops; those figures do not account for all Allied participation, as forces from other countries were also involved.

Who attended the Omaha Beach ceremony?
The Royal Household described William as joining more than 25 heads of state and veterans at the international ceremony. That establishes the scale and international character of the gathering, but does not provide a complete attendee list.
