Short answer: the “Are you still watching?” message may come from Paramount+ or from your streaming device. Roku is a confirmed possible source: its system can detect extended streaming without recognized user interaction, display a confirmation prompt and close the selected app if nobody responds. Roku also says individual streaming apps can create similar prompts. Identify which interface produced the message before changing settings.
How to identify the source
When the prompt appears, record details before dismissing it. Those details usually reveal whether it is a Paramount+ player message or a device-level overlay.
- Wording and branding: note the exact text and whether the Paramount+ logo is visible.
- Screen location: a message inside the video player points more toward the app; an overlay covering the television interface points more toward the device.
- What happens when ignored: closing Paramount+ or returning to the home screen is consistent with a device or app playback policy; a freeze or crash suggests a fault.
- Where it occurs: test on-demand shows, films, live channels and another streaming app.
- Hardware and software: write down the Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, smart-TV or console model, operating-system version and Paramount+ app version.
Roku’s filing describes a feature that detects content streaming continuously for an extended period without user interaction and can close the selected channel when the viewer does not answer. Roku also states that streaming-channel partners may implement comparable features. See Roku’s description of the device feature and its statement that apps can provide similar behavior.
Why it can appear while you are watching
These systems generally measure playback and recognized interaction, not whether a person is paying attention. A viewer can be actively watching a long film, live event or ambient video without pressing a button and still be classified as inactive.

- The remote may have weak batteries, a lost Bluetooth pairing, infrared obstruction or intermittent buttons.
- The app may stop registering remote input even though the picture continues.
- A network stall can make the player appear idle.
- Outdated app or device software can mishandle playback state.
- The streaming device may remain active even when the television display is off.
There is no verified universal timeout duration. The interval can vary by app, device, content type and software release.
What to do when the prompt appears
- Press the confirmation button and see whether playback resumes normally.
- Play a different Paramount+ title. A single program may expose a title-specific playback problem.
- Open another streaming app. A prompt in several apps points toward the device, remote or television settings.
- Exit Paramount+ completely and reopen it.
- Use the streaming device’s normal restart command; merely turning off the display may leave the player running.
- Replace remote batteries, remove obstructions and verify that button presses register immediately.
- Install available updates for the device and Paramount+ app. Paramount+ publishes guidance for streaming problems and device-software updates.
- If only Paramount+ is affected, sign out and back in, then reinstall the app if necessary.
- Record the prompt, device model, operating-system and app versions, title, content type and frequency before contacting support.
Roku-specific explanation
Roku began rolling out its device-level “Are you still watching” feature in the third quarter of 2019 and reported completing rollout to its installed base in the first quarter of 2020. The feature is therefore a credible explanation when the same prompt appears across multiple channels or when unanswered prompts return you to the Roku home screen.

Do not assume that every Roku menu has the same control. Model generations and Roku OS releases differ, and the available settings can change. Roku’s public filing confirms the feature, but it does not establish one current “turn it off” path that works on every Roku device.
Paramount+-only symptoms
If the message appears only inside Paramount+, possible causes include app-level inactivity behavior, an app malfunction, a title-specific playback issue or failure to recognize remote input. Restarting, updating, signing out and reinstalling are safer first steps than changing unrelated television settings. Paramount+’s published support pages do not verify a universal switch that disables this prompt on every supported platform.

Can autoplay settings stop it?
No reliable connection has been established. Autoplay controls whether another episode or item starts automatically. An inactivity check decides whether current playback should continue after a period without detected interaction. Turning autoplay off may prevent the next episode from starting, but it may not remove a confirmation prompt; leaving autoplay on does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
When a live stream is interrupted
A prompt after many hours of unattended live playback may be normal device or app policy. A prompt shortly after starting a game, one that appears while buttons are being pressed, or one followed by a frozen picture, crash or home-screen return is not ordinary inactivity behavior.

- Check remote pairing, batteries and obstructions.
- Restart and update the device and app.
- Test another live channel and an on-demand title.
- Photograph or record the prompt and note its exact timing.
- Report the evidence to Paramount+ if it is isolated to that app, or to the device manufacturer if it affects multiple apps.
What if the TV is turned off?
Turning off the screen does not necessarily stop the streaming player. Roku documentation describes cases in which a player can continue streaming after a connected television is switched off, depending on the app. That can allow an inactivity check to occur later. This behavior is separate from a TV sleep timer, screensaver, HDMI-CEC power control or data-saving feature. See the documented example at Roku’s filing.

There is no verified universal Paramount+ switch that disables every “Are you still watching?” prompt on every device. A platform may expose a device-level control, an app may provide its own setting, or neither may offer a user-facing option. Disabling a device-level feature, where available, can affect multiple apps and is not equivalent to changing Paramount+ autoplay.

Avoid relying on an unverified menu path such as a specific “Bandwidth Saver” setting. Roku’s confirmed inactivity mechanism, data-saving behavior, autoplay, screensavers and power timers are related but distinct. Check the exact model and current OS documentation before changing a setting.
When replacing hardware will not help
Buying a new Roku, Apple TV or Fire TV is not a guaranteed workaround: another platform or app can implement its own inactivity policy. Consider replacement only when the existing device is outdated, unstable, unsupported or demonstrably losing remote input. Unofficial tools that simulate button presses are poor substitutes because they can increase unintended playback, data use and device wear.
